AdamR Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Hi Chris, For that video, I didn't use the phone camera, no. In fact it's only a very recent update for Trackmaster that lets you do that. There is another free app, ALapRecorderHD (I think) that has support for video too, but I wasn't too keen on the G-meter. May try it again though as I don't think the Trackmaster one is that accurate after watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVNoRx3tLBs. Very similar lap time, with Steve having lower cornering speeds (on slicks in the wet!) and higher straight speeds, but his cornering G forces are showing as being quite a lot higher. That was my thinking about mounting the camera somewhere vulnerable too, if it got wet I wouldn't be too chuffed... Camera wise I have a GoPro HD mounted on top of the roll bar (prefer it there since you get a better view of the track ahead and less of the back of your helmet - although you don't get the same perspective of the blind crests at Oulton) and a mini bullet cam facing backwards. Could possibly use the phone to film my feet though. One advantage of using your phone would be that all the footage and data is already in sync, at the moment I find it sometimes fairly tricky to do that - although I should probably set the time on the camera properly, that would help! Happy to send over some sample data if you want to check it out and have a play. Cheers, Adam Quote
Lurksalot Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 This technology looks great fun , but is it a bit of a p**s take out of the track day peeps, one of the big things I hear is NO timing , I am not sure how closely they look, and while I am sure it happens You tube data logging videos showing the track day organisers logo , can't be doing them any favour with their insurance companies unless of course all the timing issue is just a ruse by the organisers Quote
AdamR Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Fair point! You will notice I don't have any times on my video. I guess if you take a video, you can get your lap times from that. Grey area... Similar subject: Saw someone with a full computer trolley (!) hooked up at Oulton on Saturday, given they turned up with 2 race-spec MX-5s in a twin-floor 40ft race wagon I'm pretty sure that will have included some timing equipment... Lurksalot Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 I have seen that sort of thing myself , often wondered why they weren't challenged Quote
CL290005 Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Adam, I think I have seen the same MX 5 set up, as far as timing it would be useful to understand if a certain style of driving is quicker, smooth is always. Not saying trackdays should become individual lap races though. I was thinking that using the phone for everything and triggering the start by a downloaded Google point makes sense for me, I always forget to press the start! Might take you up on your offer but think I may buy the APP and try it in tin top, before I do anything else. Quote
