Wile E. Coyote Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Really basic one but the word "tyre" seems to kick the search engine into overdrive. Can anyone comment on how much the life a typical track day will remove from a set of 888s or 048s? (I.e. should I expect to get 2, 3 or more days out of them before they cease to be road legal) Realise there are a lot of variables, so just looking for general thoughts. Thanks in advance! Quote
Tom Frankland (T3OMF) Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 rough estimate 10 trackdays before there not road legal....... on Medium compound But really depends on the way you drive!!! Quote

Wile E. Coyote Posted September 5, 2011 Author Posted September 5, 2011 Thanks guys, I can live with either of those estimates (but would be astonished if I got 10)! Just trying to work out my expected cost per trackday, and doesn't seem too bad (compared to what some of the heavier cars burn through). Quote
tkm_dave Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Got some medium (hardest they do) 205 wide Toyo 888 on the back of my Zetec Westie and they are borderline road legal now after almost 3,000 road miles (plus whatever the previous owner did on them, at a guess 500 miles) and 6 trackdays at various circuits! Fronts are medium 888 again (185s) and have lost roughly 0.5mm per trackday. Quote

Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 defo mediums Tom but the other two - well yes maybe Quote
markcoopers Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 I know we were trying to slide and hoon around on the airfield, but I did a set of rears in 1 day. Previous years have seen then only last 2-3 track days in truth. Geo is good, driver in this case is not so, but then it did used to spend a good proportion of time on a track. Quote
Wile E. Coyote Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 Thanks for all the further comments chaps. First day out is now booked at Oulton in a few weeks time. Quote
Mid life crisis Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 I think it depends on what type of track days you intend doing. There is a big difference in track surface between a racing circuit and airfields, the latter being much more abrasive. I did a new set of R888 after two hot weather track days at Elvington (cooked them) to the point of not being road legal. A race track will probably be much kinder to your tyres depending on ambient temperature and how hard you drive. Quote
rocket_rabbit Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 I certainly reckon on >6 track days if you look after them - come in when they are starting to overheat. I know blyton isn't typical Airfield, but that was VERY kind to the tyres Quote
