general questions for a newbie builder

Greetings.

I start my westfield build in the next few months.  Just need a little help with a few things before i get started.  I have

salvage 1800 zetec with dellortos (42,000 miles)

mt75

xr4x4 lsd 3.92 and drivetrain

Basically, i have 8 weeks or so to kill before i collect the SEiW starter kit, and thought about an engine rebuild.  What do you think would be the best way to spend this time tinkering with?  I heard something about bolts shearing around? Maybe some uprated bits and bobs? I dont really want to spend more than £300.  Or shall i leave the engine in it's modeo state?

I'm cleaning up the dellortos and will set them initially to the following specs, based on max power at around 6400rpm.

Choke size 36mm

Main jets 145

Emulsion tubes 7772.7

Air correctors 180

Idle jets 46/7850.2

Pump Jets 35/40

Aux Venturis 7848.3

Sound reasonable??  What engine manage system would be best for the dellortos and zetec? for around £300 again.

Also, what paint/hammerite do you suggest for the casings of ther engine and diff etc?  They're being sent to be sand blasted shortly.

Sorry for so many questions! I'm sure they'll be plenty more to come! Thanks for your time!

Bin the MT75 now. and fit a type 9

Zetec engine needs to be pre 1995 for SVA on carbs

Engine work

You may need a rebore

Strip and clean fit new bearings

Fit 2 ltr valve springs

Skim 35 to 40 though off the head

Fit 2 ltr or 130 spec cams

replace cam belt and every thing that goes with it

Have it balanced [the rotating engine bits]

Have the flywheel lightened Dunnell engines

Fit a low line sump Dunnell or Race line

Fit ARP rod bolts

Fit a spigot bearing to the crank

Thats more than £300 but you know a quality job cost a little more.

If he gets a Raceline sump that more than his budget in one go!  :0

Download, and use, the jetting programme found on Dave Andrews web site. It'll get you really close for the jetting and choke sizes.

I don't think you'll find an engine management system for under 300 quid. Budget on around £500 to £600, and if at all possible, avoid using Weber Alpha hardware, 'cos it isn't user configurable. I know that may not be a concern now, but it could turn out to be.......

First task is to write to Ford's technical help department for proof of age of the engine.   It must be pre June 1995 to pass emissions on carbs at SVA.

A Zetec with just 42,000 on the clock definitely won't need a rebuild unless it's been punished.   If I were you, I'd leave it well alone, and spend the money on a type 9 box.   Also, unless you are going to do a lot of track work, the standard 1800 sump will be adequate too.

I'd save my money until the car is on the road, and invest in a rolling road session to set everything up.

In the meantime, a new cam belt, new plugs, flush the oil, and give the engine a good de-gunge and paint.   Just a standard engine enamel.   The ally bits need to be etch primed before painting.   I used hammerite paint, and their zinc primer on the diff and gearbox.
