Captain Colonial Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Can't you just hook the old computer up to the new one and do a data transfer? Does the old computer still work at all? Is it a laptop or a desktop? More info needed mate! Quote
FILFAN Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Email them to yourself. Or stick old hdd in an external case and use it that way to transfer the info Quote

pistonbroke Posted September 1, 2011 Author Posted September 1, 2011 I have the old hdd connected to my desktop as "slave" , can read the disk from there . the problem is "outlook" files .PST ? are hidden somewhere on the disk and can't be found by "normal " methods (IE etc.) In short I simply need to know how to acces the old Email files and copy them to the new HDD Connecting one PC to another although a great idea in theory, does not tell me "where" and "how" to access the files ,or which folder on the new drive to store them into . I cant email them either if I can't get access to them Quote

Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 You're probably not seeing the .pst files because they're in a hidden folder by default. While the linked to method works if you can run the original PC, it won't with just the hard drive hooked up the way you've got it at the moment. I haven't got an XP machine just to hand at the mo. but from memory what you'll need to do is open up My Computer, and from the drop down menus at the top of that window select "Folder Options", on the pop up window, select the tab for "View" and scroll down the list till you find the line "Show hidden files, folders and drives" click on the little radio button next to this and click on OK. If you now do a search for *.pst on the old drive it should be able to find them. (if you search for *.pst it will find all the .pst files it can, don't rely on it being called outlook.pst! I can't remember the exact location in XP, but it's something along the lines of "C:\Documents and Settings\User Profile\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst" (where user profile is the name of the user set up on the PC) Forgot to add, when you've finished, probably worth going back into the the folder options menu and turning off the view hidden folders option. Hammy Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Assuming you can read from the disc. If you change the file options in the windows search (advanced) you should be able to search for the .pst file ( search for *.pst) , the pst is a hidden file and so not normally viewable . Use Outlook and file open and select "outlook data file" and open the .pst and then move the stuff you want. When you are up and runnig make regular backups of your data, and/or move to something like Google mail which keeps the mail on line for you (you can still access it via Outlook if you prefer) - note to self "type faster" Quote

True, that should work too; but for some reason I've found just selecting the search hidden files/folders option within Windows search doesn't always seem to get some of the system files like .pst's and .ost's Quote
