craigmorris23 Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Does anybody know to the legislation regarding children in kit cars with harnesses? I know that in a normal car there are rules regarding booster seats an child age/height but it seems to be a grey area where the Westfield is concerned. As I can tell there are no booster seats that are compatible with harnesses, so any thoughts or information would be appreciated Quote
samcooke Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Chazpowerslide had this very discussion with a copper not long ago. Drop him a PM. Quote
chappers Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 As long as the harnesses fit well I wouldn't have thought you'd get any hassle off the police. If you did then it would suggest that the harnesses don't fit as well as you might think they do. With my sports seats my normal child seat fitted fine with harnesses. Now I have JK composite seats a child seat doesn't fit so now I'm after a polystyrene booster to cut down to raise my children up so that their shoulders are nearer the shoulder straps cut outs in the seat. I feel they are too low at present. I did consider making a booster seat with expanding race seat foam, but a cut down polystyrene booster seat should be OK with my 5 point harnesses. Quote
perksy Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Worth a PM to pew He sorted this out and iirc posted a photo of the modified seat that he used Quote
RedditchJay Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I used to have a child seat in the Westy, fitted a treat and with the 4 point harness actually very, very well strapped in..... never got pulled over ... Quote
Wile E. Coyote Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I'm also interested in this subject but, since membership is still being processed, can't PM anyone. Jay, out of interest, can you recall which seat it was that you used? Quote
Pew Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I have a one of our old kids seat and back made of a single piece of polystyrene which I had to cut down the width to fit the base. To like many has said on this and the other thread mentions, the same rules as a "normal" car, so height, age, weight etc. and of course the best fit. My son does not need a seat in my tintop due to seat belts in that but still uses the booster in the westie. Quote
stephenh Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Agreed. The legal rules are exactly the same for a tintop as for the Westie. Is the child safely seated and securely belted or not?? If yes, then fine. My grandson has been in the car a few times, and loves it. However I wouldn't go very far as I am not sure that being on a booster seat in such an open car with cut away "door" openings would be sensible if he got tired. I'd only go any great distance once he could see out over the aeroscreen without a booster seat. My grand-daughter went in the car for the first time earlier this evening, also only about 2 or 3 miles, on a booster seat. She's 6 yrs. old. She loved it!! Quote
sweet orange Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I take the boy out in mine (George aged 5) without a booster. and feel that he is safer a bit further down in the seat, the harness adjusts up pretty well, and he has his own crash helmet. The only problem is he doesent like the noisy exhaust!! To sum up, strap them in, drive safe and enjoy. Quote
perksy Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I have a one of our old kids seat and back made of a single piece of polystyrene which I had to cut down the width to fit the base. Borrowed the seat off Pew when we did the Kids cancer charity event and it worked really well Was ferrying the kids about all day and never had a complaint Even Health & safety were happy Quote
SootySport Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Took my 3 grandchildren out yesterday, one at a time of course for their first rides. I have the normal Westfield seats, 4 point's and a booster seat for the youngest two and the 13 year old sat in the normal seat. Of course I did drive no more than 30mph as they are precious but in 2nd. gear, so with the noise it seemed faster for them. They all loved it and want to go out again with me. Their are no rules for what kind of booster you can use so a cheap polystyrene one can be trimmed to fit your seat, the most important bit is that the belts sit on their shoulders and waist correctly. Wile E. Coyote Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Thanks chaps - will do some hunting around and see what we can find that will fit. Quote
perksy Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Thanks chaps - will do some hunting around and see what we can find that will fit. Worth trial fitting one if you can We tried a few types in mine but as i have fairly narrow GRP seats only Pew's seat would fit Quote
ljsanders Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 You can buy inflatable booster seats now which are ideal for travelling abroad and renting a car. Bubblebum So far, I've not found a booster seat that fits the WF race seat (booster seat is too wide) but I've been meaning to try out this inflatable. First time I took the missus's 6yr old out in the Westy and then braked she almost disappeared underneath the 4 point seatbelts and into the footwell! Quote
Captain Colonial Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I think you'll find children who are so small that they require a booster seat will fit nicely inside the boot box once their legs are folded agains their chests. Tell them they're playing "Illegal Immigrant" and not to say anything or even breathe too heavily so they won't get "caught" until you get to your destination. Simples! Quote
