Hi guys/girls,

has anybody had any problems with regards to their number plate rack on the rear of their cars.?

I put the spare tyre on about a month ago and the poles attached to the number plate holder that go through the rear of the car keep slipping out when going over bumps etc. any ideas how to hold these in place better?? They seem really well held in when i did it and i couldnt get them to budge. They dont seem to be long enough and an sort of vibration just make them really loose.

Thanks

Dan

Mine has ( had) small bolts that pass through the tubes to lock in place - under car by the tank

No spare on the back of mine, the plate just sticks to the bodywork

Mongo no understand problem, Sheriff Bart!

If you have bolts going through both the inner and outer tubes, it can't slip around at all!  In fact, I had a job getting mine undone when I decided to de-mount it.

Photo please of how yours is mounted.

EDIT:

* looks at build manual *

Ah - that's different from mine, where I have a another larger diameter tube that acts as a sleeve, and the spare holder tube slides into it, and a bolt then slides though BOTH tubes to hold it in place.

I'd suggest drilling through near the end of each tube and putting a bolt through behind the mount to stop it moving backwards away from the body.

If not enough room, then bow the carrier arms outwards slightly.  This will make it harder to put back on, but should create enough resistance to stop it coming out.

That, or ditch the spare (looks better). Or No More Nails.

Dan,

I had the same problem a couple of years back travelling down to Spain.

It appears the two clasps with a bolt, under the chassis are not really up to the job and any bump you go over which rocks the spare wheel, puts presssure on the flimsy weld of the clasps, causing them to break.

I solved the problem by grinding off these clasps and welding on two tubes, to the underneath of the rear chassis, only slightly wider than the spare wheel mounting bracket. I then feed the two prongs through the welded tubes and clip it in place.

This is seen in these two photos for you..

Hope this gives you an alternative...??

Hi Dan, surprised at this.

I never had a problem with this at all, did you clamp up tight  the two long bolts that hold the wheel to the bodywork as well

as the clamp bolts.

The frame also has to be tight to the tyre as well which makes the frame long enough.

I drove thousands of miles with the spare on and it didnt ever come loose.

Let me know how you get on.

Guys thanks for the help.

Yeh its pretty much just two tunes that go into a small sort of gap which is then tightened by two screws. Look like im gunna have to do a little kirky botch job to keep them secure.

Tony- I know mate because I saw the pictures of it with the wheel on. Its maybe because up here in the midlands our roads are like the roads in Bagdad! Awful condition.
