salster Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 hi just got an 1989 westy(88 chassis) its a narrow body with an independent axle. my questions are which axle casing would be in it. what drive shafts are used? are they from a serria or is the axle& shafts specials made by westfield, looking to change to an lsd if possible. Mark (smokey mow) Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 If it's a cast alloy diff housing with the westfield logo cast into the back face then it'll be a Ford English axle diff (ie Mk1/2 escort, Anglia, Cortina etc) in Westfield own housing. Not sure about the axles but I think they are specific to Westfield. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 Not sure about the axles but I think they are specific to Westfield. They were, they also rather infamously turn up in pics on here every so often looking like someone's tied one in a knot A few owners have had their own replacements made over the years, I guess any decent prop maker can do it? salster Posted August 17, 2011 Author Posted August 17, 2011 hi checked underneath the diff casing has a westfield logo so its an english lsd im looking for, just a couple of questions is it likely to be 22 spline shafts?. shafts are hollow so looking to upgrade before they break. what diameter of shafts do you use, do you go for hollow or solid. what are ujs out of. flyingbanana Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Hollow is better than solid! Without going into details, the majority of the stress in the driveshaft is carried by the material closer to the outside. In addition, the stiffness of a shaft increases with diameter. This means that for the same mass of metal you can have a hollow driveshaft that is stronger than a smaller diamater solid shaft. Alternatively you could have a lighter hollow shaft with the same stiffness as a heavier solid shaft. I don't know if Westfield driveshafts have a particular weakspot, but am also interested in this or any upgrades, as mine has the same axle. Quote
markcoopers Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 To be honest the upgrade is not easy. This is a bespoke set up for Westfield using an English diff and bespoke drive shafts and Westfield own uprights. To upgrade will probably mean new planet gears and a larger diameter shaft. I am aware that others have made their own, but do not know personally what was done, but am not aware of an off the shelf solution.....sorry Quote
