James Edmondson Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 Guys, I'm in the process of attaching the brake pipes to the chassis using rivets and plastic p-clips. I've had problems with the centre of some of the rivets pulling all the way through the middle rather than snapping off. The ones which have pulled all the way through are still damn solid. As I had no problems previously riveting the aluminium panels to the chassis and I know the hole for the rivet is not too big, I think the problem stems from the p-clips being too deep and the rivet not being long enough to "grip" behind the chassis. ie. I need longer rivets. My question is... is Mr. SVA man going to take exception to the fact that a few of the rivets are hollow, even though they're holding firm?? Or should I drill the offending ones out and start afresh with longer rivets? Thanks James Quote
MARSDALEBEAR Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 You are correct. Rivets are too short .I used to sell these in a past life! Quote
James Edmondson Posted August 28, 2003 Author Posted August 28, 2003 Thanks for the reply, but I really want to know whether I'll have problems with the SVA if the inspector notices my hollow rivets...even if they seem as firmly in place as the rivets which snapped off as they should normally. xflow Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 I'd ask Mark at the factory The SVA is a very Mysterious thing Please post his reply I think there should be a SVA part to the Message Board Any thoughts? Quote
RichardOlive Posted August 29, 2003 Posted August 29, 2003 You need some longer rivets or fix the p clips with self tapping screws. Even though the rivets are firm now they will probably work loose and you don't want the brake pipes flapping around whether the car passes SVA or not. Richard. Quote
Megablade Paul Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 Don't cut corners, get some longer rivets and do the job properly or one day you just may wish you had Quote
atomicterrier Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 Correct fixing of all pipes and cables was a real obsession with the examiner for my SVA. Every part was pulled to check the fixings and that there was no possibility of rubbing on fixed or moving parts. He was not impressed with cable ties around chassis rails without rivetted saddles and even said that nylon P clips needed large head rivets when used to secure larger pipes (>10mm o.d.). I also agree that things will work loose as soon as you get on the road. I was surprised how many cables needed extra ties after the first trip. HTH Quote
