peksi74 Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Hiya, My Westy was first registered in May 1990 and has been passing its MOT every year since that with no problems. Yesterday I tried to get it MOT'd at Tower Garage Marlow and they said they can't let the car pass unless I install side repeaters and then referring the directive is effective for cars manufactured post 1986. Here's a picture of my stalk indicators: Westy Stalk Indicator Can anybody advice whether there is any loophole I could point out to the garage? It's just seems really absurd the car has passed MOT for 20 years and all the sudden it doesn't comply with the regulations... Many thanks in advance for you help. Regards, - Pekka Quote

peksi74 Posted July 24, 2011 Author Posted July 24, 2011 MOT testers manual Has the car failed on the lights? Read this, this is what MOT tester should work to. Sorry, I was not very clear on what was the issue. I was advised to install side repeaters to the car for it to pass MOT. The car has passed MOT for 20 years without any side repeaters hence I am a bit puzzled whether the MOT guy got this right... Was just wondering whether there is any other option for me than to go ahead with the installation of the side repeaters? Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 A brief scan shows the paragraph about being used on or after '86 needing side repeaters. As to why it's not been pulled up on before, I don't know, was it done at the same place as previous years? They may be able to tell you... On the other hand, there seems to have been a lot of changes to the MOT of late, so it may just not have been something checked previously. Or it may just be as daft as the new rules causing someone to re-read that section and realise they'd missed, or not been interpreting it correctly before. Having said that, of course there is also the Q plate issue, again, I think some of the what's tested and what's not for Q's may have changed recently to. But certainly in the past, a Q plated car would have been tested as if first used before '72, which is pre '86, so no repeaters IYSWIM Quote
Steven Thorne Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 My 1989 Q plate just flew through the MOT, no side repeaters on the car and the tester didn't mention it. Quote
JulianE Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Amended due to incorrect information given please see post below for correct info, basically : treat as pre 1975 if registered before 1998 on emissions and pre 1971 on other items so you can represent for MOT retest and show the tester this . Quote
samcooke Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 you could of course go to another garage who may not notice and pass it off but it'll cost you another test Probly won't work, the new tester will be able to see why it failed last time. Put some side repeaters on and sort it properly. That way you'll get an MoT next year and will be legal if you're ever stopped or worse involved in an accident. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 IT MAY HAVE CHANGED! There, with that out of the way, in the past the Q element also excused the cars from fog lights, so it wasn't just emissions! (I was actually just looking for possible explanations why it hadn't been pulled up before). Personally, I'm with the just fit them group I'm afraid, it's one of the easier items to retrofit. Quote
Fangio2 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Mine is same vintage. Passed in July no problem. Think you have job's worth garage unfortunately. Quote
Gromit Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I though you only needed side repeaters, post 86, if your front indicators were not visible from the side of the car. If you can see the indicator flashing from the side then you should n`t need the repeaters. HTH Quote

HTH Reading the manual linked to, if you can see light coming through the orange lens of the front indicator, (not a reflection) from a position stood level with the rear bumper, and a metre off to the side of the car, that's acceptable. Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Rereading the introduction seems to suggest Q plate cars, for emissions are treated as pre 1975, and for all other purposes pre 1971. That's from the 2010 testers manual; has this been clarified/changed now to remove the "for all other purposes" instruction? Quote
JulianE Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Pekka to sort this out give me a ring on 01594 861471 if I'm not there leave a message and you number and I will call you back.Regards Julian Quote
Bean Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 If you're on a Q reg, you don't need side repeaters. The MOT tester doesn't know the regulations, requires educating. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 The MOT tester doesn't know the regulations, requires educating. Probably. But personally, I'm too old to educate the rest of the ignorant MOT testers in the country. Fit the repeaters for the sake of, what, £20, and have a quiet and possibly safer life. Quote
