woolyback Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 Has anyone got any advise regarding best sump gasket to use on SD1 unit ?? I am running one built be RPI Engineering in Norfolk, but they fitted standard cork gasket and I think it has given up the ghost at the back side... I am going to replace it but wondered if anyone else had had sump gasket issues and could point me in right direction for a sturdier component Many thanks Wooly Quote
groucher Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 yep...dont buy the uprated ones from ebay....@ £20 each..... mine never worked and was worse than the cork.... Sure someone will tell you RTV from landrover is the best seal yet...... Otherwise make sure your sump flange is flat before you put it back on. good luck scott Quote
woolyback Posted July 3, 2011 Author Posted July 3, 2011 Scott, OMG ... that is some animal that you are developing (Checked out the website) !! Thanks for the advise, I had seen the 'Heavy duty' gaskets on Ebay and was considering buying one but I think I will hold fire now. If you think Land Rover might have something that will do the trick then I might pop into my local dealership and have a chat with the Service guys ? Anyone else that has any ideas I would love to hear you thoughts. Thanks again scott. Regards, Matt Quote
groucher Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 no problem, think this is what you need STC50550 but it aint cheap and you need to follow the instructions correctly to make it work. STC50550 just a shame today for me...as my mot tester failed my emissions.....first time in 13 years....and i missed a red hot day to do some real tuning.... good luck scott Quote
adamnreeves Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 Scott, I used this and it work first time. Very tricky to install the sump without touching the chassis with it though one handing and installing the bolts especially as you have to offer up level in one shot. I used four longer bolts to offer it up and then replaced with the shorter bolts once I have some in. Quote
lippydave Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Any proper automotive silicone RTV stuff will do the job to be honest, used sparingly in conjunction with the stock cork gasket. Just make sure your sump flanges are as flat and true as they can be... If you PM me your address I have a brand new Rover cork sump gasket still in the packaging that you can have for nowt.... Quote
groucher Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Adam, Did you use any copper washers on some of your sump bolts....as some of mine have started to drip oil.... Not from the sealing faces but looks like through the bolt holes.... its been suggested that copper washer should be used on the holes that line up with the mains cross bolts. scott Quote
woolyback Posted July 4, 2011 Author Posted July 4, 2011 Groucher, Sorry to hear about MOT mate ... that sucks Hope you get it sorted and retest puts you back on the road ASAP. Thanks for your help guys, I think I am going to try a combo of sealant and cork gasket (Thanks Lippydave). I have ordered a RoverV8 engine build manual and am currently on the look out for a pair of inspection ramps / lifts so that I can be initiated into the world of Grease Monkeyism !! Had nearly 8 years of virtually trouble free fun in my Seight... its only a matter of time before stuff starts going wrong, so I had better get learning !! Cheers, Wooly Quote
woolyback Posted July 4, 2011 Author Posted July 4, 2011 Adam, I think I have seen you working on your car on Youtube ... is it a yellow one with aeroscreen and digital DASH type displays ?? If it is you... its a cracker mate. V8 Westfields ... I LOVE EM !!!! Quote
groucher Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 wooly, If you search the web via google for land rover "rave" discs.... it will give you all the information you need from 3.5 -4.6 and bmw engines..... A must have in my eyes...dont bother with haynes they aint worth the price.... Think there a 3 discs in total..... If you get stuck PM me and i will help you out. scott Quote
woolyback Posted July 4, 2011 Author Posted July 4, 2011 Cheers Scott, I ordered a CD ROM off Ebay (Not sure if any good as not arrived yet) ... will take a look at it and see if I want anything more technical/detailed etc. Thanks again, I will be in contact if I get stuck.... which I probably will (I am as far from a mechanically minded person as it gets) ! Do not use cork gasket and there is a procedure for applying the RTV and it is not sparingly. Detailed in the RAVE workshop manual. Quote

As you've probably read did not use cork gasket the 2nd time. 1st time I did and it leaked. Quote
