westfield cosworth on ebay in black 400bhp.any thoughts what its worth or is it just overkill.sorry cant do clicky any help with that cheers phil

Indeed, it looks very nice but I would agree with RedditchJay, given it produces 400bhp which is almost double the power of the standard Green Top engine in my Westfield, that will be quite a tuned engine to which reliability issues and associated costs may go hand-in-hand.

My car, at 224bhp, has a good power delivery throughout the rev range and can be best described as very rapid on the road.  I have a feeling (and that’s all it is, based on no experience) that 400bhp would make the power arrive in a light switch sort of way; Off-On.

In a car as light as a Westfield, that could be interesting.

Just my thoughts.

PS  I do not know your location but if you wish to view my car (not for sale) to look at the engine installation, you are more than welcome.

Not at all. Its on a T34, would be a pussycat to drive off boost with nice and pretty progressive powerband.

Because Westys are so light, they dont make full boost in 1st or 2nd gear. That would only be pulling 2 bar and making big power in 3rd onwards so you dont get the traction problems you think you would!

I think it looks a really well spec'd car. I like the fact its apparently got a big intercooler as heat management is key (especiallu if you wanna track it)

a 400bhp is just not the scary animal you would think it is. I had a car of very similar spec before I went really power crazy... mine was a nunney cat on the road and really usable.

Yb engines are VERY VERY strong as standard... they get let down my old parts like injectors, old wiring looms, old sensors..  or anything that causes the engine to run lean... and melt under boost.

so if you do buy it... first job. Get it to a Cosworth specialist and get it run on some rollers to check the fuelling.

Spec looks excellent and up to date apart from the slightly old skool Turbo.

I like it alot.

Depends what you want it for?

Hooning about on a track or a smooth ride about the lanes. No point in having 400bhp for the road, it's just eating into reliability and shortening service life without ever getting the chance to use it. Good bragging rights though. Sounds impressive to your mates but I've not found much need for more than 130bhp, in fact 80 or so in the old Robin Hood was fun, but it all depends, it's your money Phil and nobody can tell you how to spend it, I'm a different animal from a hardcore trackday nut and you're a different animal to me.

... but then if you want sedate and comfortable, buy a Morgan, or a Mondeo. Westies are hooligan cars that take no prisoners when you put your foot down.

What was getting hot? water temps or charge temps?

did he have custom rad or custom inter or charge cooler?

A std 4x4 Cosworth cooler can easily cope for endless laps with 350bhp from a T34 if you get some decent airflow to it!

I used to lap HARD at full chat until I ran out of fuel in my 380bhp ish Westy.

I like N/A 7 type cars as well... and they are probably better and much more suited to a little car like a Westy...  I just wanted a nutty turbo one!

you don't NEED big power in a Westy to have fun. FAR FAR from it... but 400bhp from a YB doesn't need to be unreliable or unusable and it isnt the scary monster you would think!

I wouldnt do it again though if I am honest!  would just get a naturally aspirated Caterham R500 or CSR.  Would have been cheaper and a make alot more sense financially! and be less of a pain in the A*** as bits are on shelf and not all one or two offs!

but I do love my Westy!

The black one looks great and really well done and spec'd.

I had a Dax with a stage one cossie turbo. Great fun. Great noise. Very easy to drive. Heavy gear change. Heavy front end. Nothing like a hissing turbo spooling up on a damp road to keep you alert. Passengers can't believe the thump of power you get and my wife refused to get back in it after the first spin. Watch for oil leaks at the front of the block. Check how hot your feet get on a summers day!

Do it! You need that power.
