Right ive narrowed it down :p to 4 cars

1. ep3 civic type r (2002)

2. clio 172 cup

3. 106

4. 205

In that order

So far am thinking will go with the civic as there are plenty of them about especially cat d's or accident repaired as at end of the day will only be stripping it out and starting from scratch, as for the list above I think they are all very very good handling cars even as standard... unless anyone think one of them is leagues ahead of the others????

But then half of me thinks going with the civic defeats half the object of having a really cheap track day car instead of say picking up a 106 or 205 for a few hundred quid and going from there???

I suppose is what I am asking is what does everyone think has the best handling chassis and is the lightest? as always I suppose the older the lighter.....

This is exactly what I have done, this is for dry days -

and this is for wet days (1.6 16v with a charger = a lot of fun!) -

Agreed - Westy and Clio for me too :)

Both are very entertaining and fun in their own ways. The Westy is pretty brutal and very engaging, requires concentration - the Clio is nippy and very chuckable, charging into corners and flicking the wheel getting a slight but very controllable slide on is so much fun.

As said, they are also safe/decent in the wet (video below the instructor commented on how good the car felt in the wet), and SWMBO can handle it fine (whereas the Westy is relatively tricky to drive).

Other people have mentioned 106s, 205s, Civics - all of them seem to be relatively common on UK track days for good reason. I guess the choice comes down to whether you want a slightly older (and therefore lighter and cheaper, usually) car that needs a bit more tinkering, or something newer that might not be QUITE as lively but you can (generally) just drive. I guess all cars have their small flaws and downsides but I don't think you'd go too far wrong with either of your list.

One thing that has struck me recently is that buying a car for this purpose is almost more about the owner than the car itself. The way they go about maintaining/upgrading it seems to be a good yardstick for how reliable the car will be!

Just a thought to bear in mind.  Once you have it all done to the max spec you want, you might get the itch to enter it into some sort of motor sport. If you go 2 litre ie a Clio you will be in with some very very powerfull machinery. Get a 1600 say the 106/civic and you will be in a very competitive 1600 class.  Saying that our Nova Rally car is a 1600 with 209 bhp and were still at least about another 10-15 bhp and a clicky box behind the top boys in our class. But well get there ;-) Pilot Petes Civic is quick and 106's do very well on stage rallys. If your sure your only sticking with track days though, then my choice would be the Clio.

The only thing I am thinking bout the civic route is ok say I gought yours for £2800 would leave me £2200 ish and I dont think I will be able to do everythink I want with that... Ie susspension,brakes,wheels,tyres, and thats before touching the engine... do you agree??

Hmm, looks 'ok'. There must be a reason the engine has been swapped... and if the guy who wrote the advert has done the work, I would give it a very good scrutineering before parting with any cash! Also, the 172 Cup is 89kg lighter as standard than the 172 (and other variations) of the same model - thinner glass, thinner paint, less sound-deadening tar patches, no ABS, no AC - to do the same mods to a standard model will take a lot of man hours and close to £500.

I picked up a 172 Cup with AVO GTX shocks, corner weighed, Momo wheel and boss, Corbeau Revolution GRP seats, Schroth 3" turnbuckle Harnesses, OZ F1 wheels with Kumho Ecsta Sprt tyres, wireless tyre pressure system installed, uprated Brembo front discs with Carbone Lorraine pads (DS2500/Mintex 1144 equivalents), with slightly tatty bodywork (bonnet has been pressed down on to close the catch but dent pulled out, front wing had a scrape and been resprayed) for £3700. Then fitted a 6-point bolt in cage (4-points are a few hundred less), spare set of wheels and tyres (£110 for some 2nd hand OZ Superturismos plus £280 for some Federal RSR-595s (like R888s but better in the wet and cheaper)) and a rear anti roll bar. £5k and ready to go!

Have a gander at Clio Sport: http://www.cliosport.net/forum/forum.php, LOTS of useful info over there (although it can be hard to weed out the crap from the good stuff sometimes). A lot of the owners are relatively young and can need a quick sale, it's not like Westy owners where most people can afford to hang onto their toys until someone with the full asking price comes along...

I would stick with civic. Handles great as standard.... The only thing I would defo change is the brakes... Mine were shocking that I had, (I put new pads on hoping that was the problem, but 4k later they were in the bin, and went then with performance ones....But to be honest, the discs are so small, and calipers sh1te!) and although it was a german car, Im assuming brakes are on all type r's the same..

As for the engine...I think if you got yourself a hondata ecu, and altered the ivtec to come in a bit earlier (so that it pulls earlier coming out of slower corners) itll be awesome.

I must admit I owned one a few years back and loved it although it was completly standard... what year is your one? did you not change susspension? and did you keep it on the 17" wheels for track use?

Yeah, there are good deals to be had, and a lot of the cars will have a 'history' you can find through Cliosport too.

Was just about to say that you are more than welcome to a spin in my Clio, but you are a fair way away :p I don't think you would be unhappy with a Civic or a Clio, I think in general the Clios are a bit more agile but the Civics are better built... and the engines are mega!

Try and drive a couple to see what you think maybe? Even if they are standard it will give you a good idea.

I havent got it anymore..I ended up selling it for a mazda 3 mps.

It was a 05 reg..I never tracked it- The brakes were just so shoddy that I wanted to upgrade. Had a near miss once, just because they struggled to bring me to a stop..

On a track, they would be fading within minutes.

I wouldnt see any real reason to change wheel size for tracking tho...? I suppose depending on what sort of track, and speeds to going to be reaching-Oh unless maybe to save weight ofcourse! I suppose it depends how serious youre going to take it all....Im thinking with the budget u have, its more about having a bit of fun...

I do love these cars but are quite heavy wspecially with that big v6 up front, again a great engine though used to have an old golf vr6 many moons ago and loved it :p
