steppenwolf Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 Steppenwolf, I thought we agreed that the next comming thing was a gas turbine engined Westy (a TEC?) as they rev to the correct level (i.e. more than 40,000rpm - which is as it should be), produce the correct amount of power (700shp+)? We did indeed agree this and I was all for removing a power unit from the Jet Ranger ( with nodomatic rotor shaft ) that was giving the pleasure flights at FOS but if you recall, we came up against three major problems:- 1. we didn't have a 3/4" spanner 2. the exhaust was on the wrong side and it would have meant cutting another hole unless we could find a Pinto engined car to use 3. if we did find a Pinto engined car, it would have been sacrilege to have removed the engine as amongst many others, it is better than a VX ..... mb893 Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 isnt it funny, youve only got to mention the 'P' word I don't know, have you read Mr Willis's comment - he doesn't like V8s either Steppenwolf, I told you to bring a full tool kit, after all it would have been the work of but a moment.... engine out, into rucksack.... calmly walk away - nothing to see here, nothing to see JC Quote
S8ight Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 but everyone who hasnt got a V8 is jealous of them that goes without saying Quote
stu999 Posted July 18, 2003 Posted July 18, 2003 but everyone who hasnt got a V8 is jealous of them that goes without saying But a big block Chevy wont fit. Which means the next best engine for power per/pound is the Vx.... *touch paper smoulders dangerously close to it's destination* Quote
neilwillis Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Nowt wrong with V8s as long as they're in a Cobra where they belong Funny there should be all this talk of turboshaft engines. I was at RAF Cosford, and the museum in particular just last weekend. They had a gorgeous Blackhawk heli engine that would fit a Westfield a treat. Coming from an airframe, it had to be light. Just imagine the gorgeous noise as it wound up! And at 650 Shaft HP, what a prospect!!!! I also saw this German Aero engine that was made up of two V12s (I think) bolted together!! Bit big for a Westie, but can you imagine the noise that'd make? Lets get real though, that idea was about as realistic as a VX being better than a Zetec Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Just to throw a spanner in the works if a CEC Westy was built as a BEC Westy ie very minimalist would there be that much in the power to weight The Busa engine will make 167bhp (175ps) this has been taken from Suzuki’s web site. The busa engine and box is aprox 90KG dry sumped. The Duratec engine would be 90kg and box would be 40kg making 130kg this engine would make 180bhp or (188ps) on throttle bodies Now for the maths if both engine and gearboxes had been fitted to similar spec cars the busa would be about 450kg and the Duratec would be about 490kg add driver to both (80kg) 167/0.53=315 bhp per t 180/0.57=315 bhp per t Now I know that the BEC would be cheaper to build in the first place but the the CEC would likely be cheaper to tune to 220bhp (385 bhp per t) after that so the hole thing about BEC vs CEC is a bit like P***ing in the wind. Both great just different. Quote
samcooke Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 90kg is a loaded up busa - ie induction, starter, alternator etc. I'd imagine 90kg is for a bare duratec. Bhp/tonne is not the only factor, lighter weight makes for less inertia in braking, accelerating and changing direction. A 500kg duratec car wouldn't see which way a 450kg busa went on the track. Four banger car engines sound a bit dull too, don't you think? Quote
hilux Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 there is only one choice to make - Zetec or VX Isnt that two choices then Quote
S8ight Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 its great on here when people start debating different engines its a good job no one talks about politics or religeon Quote
mb893 Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Isnt that two choices then Na, that's NO choice - believe me no one talks about politics or religeon I thought this was both.... Quote
neilwillis Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 there is only one choice to make - Zetec or VX Isnt that two choices then How can you choose between one? Quote
neilwillis Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 Between Zetec n VX, that is one choice, one option, it just has to be Zetec! I just saw a repeat of a Top Gear. The one with Neil Morrisey. To quote Mr Clarkson - "they go mEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and you can hear em from miles away. They sound awful" So, BEC it is then Quote
steve_m Posted July 19, 2003 Posted July 19, 2003 The busa will make 180-185bhp on a car as there's more room for a proper exhaust manifold and the air box isn't used. Quote
