Fit what engine you want. Tell the DVLA you've fitted a new engine, and let 'em have the number (IE fill in the relevant part of your V5, and send it in). Tell the MOT man it's a kit car, so visible smoke test only for the emissions test. If it's a Q plater, he'll know (or should) that any way. If it's a 93 reg (K or L reg?), just make sure the new engine can pass the pre 95/post 86 (I think) emissions test.

The engine can be brand new, for all the Government agencies care, so there are no extra SVA or MOT hoops to jump through.......

OK, points taken, I'll try sitting on it instead of talking out of it in future

I still love my Zetec though

Is it true that Westfield and Caterham owners don`t exactly send each other Christmas Cards ? Having worked with a Sales Rep who wants a C*******, he constantly asks me how my "poor mans C******* is going", to which i simply reply "well i`m driving and your still dreaming !" Sorry - just had to ask the q.

On the topic of dry sumping bike engines, it seems (from threads on this site) only engines over 1000cc need it. I was told different, being that in a bike the engine (and oil) moves and leans with the rider, but in the car, especially on long fast sweeping bends or tracks the oil is forced to one side of the engine on rare occasions causing seizings. Also, its a good way to reduce overall engine height. Are these reasons true ? Are there cheaper ways of dry sumping rather than sending off to Westfields ? I was told about £1500 to do this.

Does anyone have any good contacts for companies that are able to modify the prop shaft ?

I have tried a screaming BEC, with a CBR1000 engine in a lightweight Jeremy Phillips Sylva Striker chassis, which was blistering. So i`ll decide which way to go, and would prefer BEC, it seems a bit daunting though thats all.

MB893 - i`m not a million miles from you. I`m in Guildford, so a look under the bonnet / chat would be excellent sometime. Are there any BEC owners who`d be willing to give me an email address to fire more q`s rather than filling up this forum ?

Cheers, Adrian.

Blatman,

Thanks for the response. the car is a Q but has been changed to an irish plate long ago (apparently there was a loop hole in the law and my V5 says "previously registered as Q.....).

So as far as I can make out......

I change the engine, fill out the V5 with new engine number and send to DVLA, at next MOT the blokey is told and shown it was given a Q plate and can only test for visible smoke. Engine can be young, old, with or without cat because it is a Q plate and exempt from emissions probe being shoved up its backside.  oh and insurance for cc change if needed.   And thats it?......   simple

  Cheers

Get a blade or R1 so you don't have to worry about dry sumps

Correct! Or a ZX9R or CBR1000. You can get a thing called a Accusump for around £300(?) but for litre class engines they really aren't necessary.

and drive round the outside of all this car engined nonsense...

Oh dear :0 , just when you thought it was safe - I take it all back Neil :D

AJ9939, a visit next Tuesday to the Surrey meet seems in order :t-up:

there is a lot of light hearted banter between the two. generally good humoured.  some idiots (on both sides of the fence) forget that it is the experience and not the badge that is important. ignore them.  there boring

The day I take offence is the day I should get a life.

I'm with you on the Caterham/Westfield debate.   I've met some top Caterham guys.

I even know an SVA inspector who's a nice bloke!!!!

It's just these BEC's....... :p  :p

If I promise to say I love Bike engines, will you be nice to me?

By the way, I've read a couple of times on here people saying that <1100cc engines do not require dry sumping.

That is not a definitive rule. It just happens to be that some (or maybe most) of the smaller engines dont.

However, that cannot be related to their CC's!

A sump is a sump after all.... There is no major difference in sump designs between the bigger engines and the little ones.

Just was a bit concerned that people were thinking <1100cc automatically meant that oil surge wasnt an issue....

Cheers,

Al.

Good point about dry sumoing Al.  But I think its true to say that for the common BEC applications:

Hayabusa's, Blackbirds and ZX12's need dry sump to be safe.

Fireblades, R1 and ZX9R should be ok with out a dry sump.

Other engines don't seem to be used as commonly and so, as Al says, they need to be judged individually.

Dont forget though, that Blades need a sump baffle ;)

But neither do they give you goose bumps like a nice Vauxhall engine* !!

Absolutely correct.... :p  :p  :p

Has anyone mentioned    that pound per bhp the VX is the most economical to tune  :D  :D  :D  :p  :p  :arse: and that the current VX220 doesnt use the Ecotec engine but uses the cast iron lump of the CXE   :0  :0  ;)  ;) which CCC consider is now a better all rounder than the Elise......

What does that tell you all  :arse:  :arse:  :arse:

Dax have been running busa engines on slicks for a while now and not a single engine problem.  I think a lot depends on how you treat them, use a quality oil, check oil levels, baffle the wet sump etc and they will be OK.  Duncan Cowper's turbo busa Rush for example runs on slicks and only has a simple baffle system from Holeshot.  He's competing against and beating single seaters so he's not holding back  :D

Somebody else, I think on the Yahoo BEC list (?), made the comment that some of the engines that have gone pop in cars would have gone pop on the bike anyway.  I think there is probably some truth in this.

We should all sell our Westys and buy a VX220? After all it is better than an Elise  :sheep:
