Norman Verona Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Harv, I get mine through the company phone contract which just happens to be an orangy colour. The lap docks aren't available yet, due for release on 31st May. Orange are quoting 3-4 weeks delivery. It's nice to see restraint on the part of the manufacturers and dealers as if they shouted loud they would be out of stock in a few hours. I need (yet) another lappie so this solves two probs in one. It should be delivered tomorrow. We're off to Ireland on Saturday so I should return deaf (from nagging) but knowing all it's little quirks. My son is a huge apple fan but I bet he wants to "borrow" the Atrix when I get back. He's waiting for the Iphone 5 and I'm guessing it will be powerful enough to do the same. Apple are probably making changes now to rival the Atrix. Quote
Guest Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 i have played with an atrix in a lapdock ,its impressive , but as to whether i actually like it time will tell , i can't have mine till june first as the orangy people won't let their business partner release it till then you should get a dock a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and a media remote with yours though .... also gingerbread update should be out fairly soon for it which is a massively better version of android . i suggest the lapdocks have been ordered in bulk for both the orangey customers and the ones they partner , they had better both have the reduced offer price . Dibby Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 also gingerbread update should be out fairly soon for it which is a massively better version of android . Wouldn't say that, the Desire HD got updated to Gingerbread last week and in all fairness there's not a lot of difference between 2.2 and 2.3.3. A couple of milliseconds 'snappier' but that's about it. Not many new features, menus or options to get the general user excited ... like Apple products, there is a big buzz about nothing with Gingerbread. I bet there are already Gingerbread ROMs through here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=994 if you want to try it out. Quote
Dibby Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Can of worms opened then.... i love my blackberry thats why i was going to stick with it, but the problem is I dont know enough about the HTC/Android market to make a decision. In short, what can the HTC do better than the blackberry? Only played with the wifes Blackbery and not really used one 'properly' but Android is a cross-platform operating system rather than being tied to a single phone/ manufacturer. The Blackberry doesn't feel as snappy and polished, kinda like it was cobbled together in a rush and the logic of the menu system isn't really thought out. Customisability is lacking, you use it the way the RIM want you to use it and thou shalt not install anything they haven't put on their list Software on Android is open(ish), developed by the people for the people and with a massive user base due to not being tied to a specific phone manufacturer there are vastly more and better apps for pretty much anything you can think of. From F1 timings to fart noise apps and customisable for anyone from a kid looking for fun and games, serious business professionals syncing with exchange servers and document editing to old people with big easy to use buttons. As well as software being made by the users there is the weight of Google behind it developing the operating system and apps. Depends how you view Google vs the walled garden of Apple designed to pump money for old rope, Microsoft and RIM who missed the boat when the smartphone set sail into the mainstream. Personally, I'd say Blackberries were the kiddy of smartphones 5-10 years ago but things change quick, Nokia are in serious trouble despite previously being the only phones worth having. Bang for buck you can't beat an Android. Long and rambly but that's why I chose Android over Blackberry. Plus I can roll my MP3 player, satnav and phone into 1 device in my pocket (which I'm sure you can do with the Blackberry and any smartphone), all my contacts, calendars and emails are backed up on servers in the interwebosphere rather than stored on the phone. Phones have come on a leap forward in the last few years Oh, and rather than buy a £30, 24 month contract, have you looked into buying the phone outright and getting one of these £5-10 a month all you can eat SIM only packages? It saved us a few quid in the long run Quote
Norman Verona Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I've got a Nokia smartphone which cost me £85. I had a PAYG sim but converted to a £10.35 pm contract (by DD) as the payg was costing me more than £10 pm. However the Nokia OS is crap, the screen is not visable in daylight (even on a cloudy day). I'm getting back into work (only because we're expanding at 200% pa at the moment) so need something better. Also need a lappie (broke the screen on one and the next I picked up from the office is so full of malware, trojans and viruses that it will need a complete reload. Easier to get the computer that's also a phone.... By the way, Nokia problems (I was a big fan) are because they tried to develop their own rather than go open. Quote
Dibby Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Nokia just missed the smartphone waggon. They stood still for 3 years and the phone market moved on. Apple manage a closed source wall garden and make a massive profit by getting the marketing and product image spot-on while selling inferior hardware. A marketing dream Quote
Porkie Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I have one. AWFUL!!! hate it. worst phone I have ever had. I am going back to my old blackberry bold. I only carry a blackberry for work emails and bbmessenger. otherwise I would just use my iphone4 for everything. crap phone but awesome toy. Torch is PONY! Quote

I got the impression from my daughters that all chavs are Blackberry users and that bbmessenger is the comms tool of choice for 'dem who spk txt like 'innit'? I run an HD2 with dual boot android on it having used gingerbread on a couple of the new phones designed around it ,you will see the improvement as an when you have a dual core . My blackberry i run for work , best thing is amazing battery life for what it does but then again what would you expect from a phone not running 3G Dibby , i suspect we frequent alot of the same tech forums i bet your even a TV torrents member , and if not why not Quote
Dibby Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Dual boot? You must be on XDA. I love poking around with gadgets, Id spend hours giving the micowave a new ping noise if I could! Nope, not on TV Torrents, I was there a while ago, also UKnova for TV catchup but Usenet has taken over lately. Torrents are reserved for a select few sites, communities helping out amateur musicians and DJs spread their music about. Dual core would be nice one day but no point upgrading to a 1st gen dual core phone for the sake of keeping up with the Joneses but definately the way to go if you're due for a replacement about now. Guest Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 i am lucky emough to have 12 month tariffs with t-mobile ,max personal discount ,plus half price line rental on the old and hugely sought after t-mobile staff plan ...... basically my new dual core will be 20 quid a month and a free phone which always gets a not possible from the forum boi's ..... TV torrents is great coupled with Rss feeds or so i here. Quote
Norman Verona Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Do we allow all this dirty talk on our very respectable forum? Quote
Dibby Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Dirty talk? All above board m'lord. There is such a thing as legal file sharing despite the public knee jerk reaction the media is training us to develop Decent deal there Harv. On a company phone here ... take the SIM out and buy my own handsets, works out on a £200 phone to be the equivalent of £16/ month. Wife's got my old Desire on a £10/ month 3 contract with all she can eat data, text and minutes. Wouldn't buy a phone as soon as it comes out, I tend to wait for the price to drop after 6 months or so Quote
Norman Verona Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I'd agree with that but I need a phone that works better than the Nokia and I need a new lappie. QED Quote
