papacroft Posted July 13, 2003 Posted July 13, 2003 My friend has just purchased a Westy and we need to get it back to Oldham (Lancs) from Bristol. At the moment he is having some difficulty in finding/hiring a suitable trailer with the appropriate straps etc. Can anyone advise/help? Thanks Mark.. Quote
adhawkins Posted July 13, 2003 Posted July 13, 2003 Any reason you can't just drive it? Driving a Westy isn't much fun on a motorway, but it'd probably be the cheapest option. With a little creative navigation you could definately find a more 'interesting' route home. It's about 180 miles on the motorway according to AutoRoute... Andy Quote
S8ight Posted July 13, 2003 Posted July 13, 2003 drive it ! theres some fantastic roads on the way Quote
papacroft Posted July 13, 2003 Author Posted July 13, 2003 The car has not been SVA'd/registered etc. Quote
adhawkins Posted July 13, 2003 Posted July 13, 2003 Ah, that complicates matters There are a number of people in the North with trailers. Perhaps one of them will be along to offer you the loan of one. Failing that, anywhere near you that might hire them? You don't need anything special, I would have thought there'd be plenty of places that do it. Andy Quote

You don't need anything special, I would have thought there'd be plenty of places that do it. That's what we thought. However the car transporter trailers seem few and far between. My friend went to pick up a trailer today to find that it was much bigger than he anticipated. I think it was around 16 feet long and something more suited to moving excavation equipment etc. It also had no straps for securing the vehicle to the trailer. He decided against hiring it for these reasons. Quote
jeff oakley Posted July 13, 2003 Posted July 13, 2003 Get the old yellow pages out and get ringing, ask them for a low loader car trailer, hire fleet trailers will be bigger than you need as they have to accomadate all sizes. The best are the ones where the trailer lifts at the front on hydraulics so you do not need a set of ramps. Most reputable firms will hire straps but good old rope tied at the rear then winched tight and tied again at the front works well enough. I pay £45 per day all in for one in Bristol which is as described. If you have never towed before be aware that the numpties on the road never see the trailer until they have nearly hit it and will never allow you enough room at junctions etc.If I am about when you pick it up I will give you a hand willingly to load and rope. Megablade Paul Posted July 14, 2003 Posted July 14, 2003 Can't help with the trailer, but congrats on the purchase and look forward to seeing it at one of the Manchester meets soon Also shout out if you need any SVA advice, we've all been through it and happy to share the learning Quote
7SE Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 Or... Your friend could always join a motoring orgn, with return to home cover, and then 'breakdown' nr Bristol Wouldn't do it myself of course... Quote
adhawkins Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 And how would he explain that his unregistered, un-SVAd car broke down on the road? Andy Quote
chrisbin Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 And how would he explain that his unregistered, un-SVAd car broke down on the road? Andy would they know/notice...?? Quote
7SE Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 Someone did suggest being 'creative' earlier in the thread - in another context, I know... Quote
adhawkins Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 And how would he explain that his unregistered, un-SVAd car broke down on the road? Andy would they know/notice...?? Well, it wouldn't have a number plate for a start... Andy Quote
7SE Posted July 15, 2003 Posted July 15, 2003 Well, it wouldn't have a number plate for a start... That's where you would have to start 'creating' stuff Quote
papacroft Posted July 16, 2003 Author Posted July 16, 2003 Also shout out if you need any SVA advice, we've all been through it and happy to share the learning Thanks Paul, we have already talked with Mr. Hurdsfield who seemed keen to help us through the maze of SVA. As for the trailer...still coming up short. We've just tried to get mine loaded onto a friends trailer, but it was just too high creating problems with angles and then catching sump or bell housing. Mr Hurdsfield gave us an idea that Glen might know of a trailer, so my friend Neil will give him a ring him later. Other than that Westfield have made 2 recommendations for company's that can collect the car. Thanks Mark.. Quote
