Also, surely you're still gonna need a pump if the tyre goes down - IMHO, this is worse than carrying a small toolkit

Nope. The puncture repair kits come with 3 compressed air cannisters that will inflate a car (or motorcycle) tyre enough to get you home/to the nearest air supply/Kwik Fit......When used properly, the puncture repair kit leaves the tyre in a fit state to repair properly, with a nice internal mushroom patch, and which Kwik Fit do for free, with you paying only for the cost of balancing the wheel.........

Use Tyreweld, and the tyre is scrap.

Read the link I posted, and remember, Matt Seabrook is a bit of an expert when it comes to tyres..........

On UK roads, do you feel the Westfield needs the extra power that ditching the spare wheel would yield?

I don't think anyone really ditches the spare to seave weight (although some might). However, it is around 25 kilo's you're saving (assuming a 15" rim that isn't an Oz Superleggerra), and it's weight that's stuck right out at the rear of the car. It's a nice place to loose weight from, IMO........

I agree that having all that weight at the back is not ideal, but for the sake of losing it, I think forsaking the spare is a bit drastic.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't critisize anyone for choosing not to carry one, and I'd be the first to help anyone sat at the roadside with a flat.   I just think that for use on roads, you'd be hard pressed to use the maximum capabilities of a Westfield without driving it harder than is appropriate for the conditions on public roads.

Track days - a different matter entirely of course  ;)

I was informed (unreliably?) that the new Minis are not sold with a spare wheel and only a can of tyre weld.

Good enough for a small BM

the Clio 172 cup has no spare just 2 cans of tyre weld

Ive ditched mine more for cosmetic reasons and the fact that I dont like covers and Im not buying a matching spare !

Ive bought a can of tyreweld and if I have to use it and wreak the tyre then as long as it gets me home/to nearest garage then thats good enough for me.

Ive been thinking of getting one of the repair kits with the co2 capsules (£8 from M&P's)

Trev   :)

Please explain exactly what this kit is and where to get it as I currently carry a can of Halfords `tyreweld`  :0

(Who are M&P )

I assume you require no jack simply turning the wheel until the puncture is apparent and an `umbrella` shaped plug is inserted from the outside and pulled into position. Then a number of one use co2 cartridges (like on my MTB) inflate the tyre  :durr:

Most motorcycle shops sell 'em, and all BMW motorcycle dealers sell 'em, 'cos they're OE on BMW motorcycles.

I have owned several BMW motorcycles since 1986.

I have NEVER been stranded with a puncture.

I was a Despatch Rider for 17 years, so I did my share of high mileage.

Make of that what you will........

There a place selling them here...,

I seem to be in a minority of one here but I take my spare off for track days but leave it on the rest of the time, not least because I like the look of it on the back - it suits the styling of this type of car perfectly IMHO!

A friend of mine has a Ferrari and the standard equipment is a Fire extinguisher sized can on tyre weld.

Tyre fitters don't like this stuff as it makes a mess when they break the bead and remove the tyre. However I have had a couple of tyres repaired that did have tyre weld in them (the tyre fitter was a mate) as it can be washed out with water.

I think if you can find a friendly fitter you should have no probs in using said product when it come to repairs.
