Norman Verona Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 In the dim distant past I seem to recall that AF spanners will fit Whitworth nuts/bolts etc. The sizes quoted are, of course, different. Am I correct or do I need to invest in a set of Whitworth spanners and sockets in order to remove the head on a Norton Commando 850. Just send your answers on the back of your credit card, Thanks Quote
Norman Verona Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 Google is my friend. Found a chart which shows that all Whitworth spanner sizes are in fact measured Across Flats but the Whitworth size is the thread width not the head width. Phew, that saved a few bob. Quote
Vinny's Westie Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Working on my old Morris which is all Whitworth I gave up and bought a set of spanners as it wasn't worth the hassle trying to get something to fit AF or Metric. I believe Machine Mart do a set, mind was a couple of years ago. Quote
Norman Verona Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 Ah, the table I found gives Whitworth sizes, AF sizes and metric sizes. The AF sizes are shown as exact fit whereas the metric are to two decimal places. I'm now confused. mumble, mumble, mumble.... Quote
Norman Verona Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 Whitworth are imperial across the flats but not the same as US AF sizes. Life is full of mysteries. Sockets and spanners ordered. how about this. I find an good web site with lots of advice and tools. I select the sockets and it takes me to Google Pay. I complete the form and look for a "continue shopping" button. cant find one so arrow back, select the spanner set and it takes me back to the google pay page. I eventually (after several attempts) i telephone the company. Everyone phones about that says the charming lady, you have to buy one at a time. But I can do it over the phone for you. Isn't technology wonderful. Quote
peterg Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 What do you expect Norman, you're buying spanners and sockets for an era before t'interweb Quote
pistonbroke Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 If you think that lots confusing , take a look at BSP (british standard pipe thread ) sizes The mind boggles Quote
Norman Verona Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 I'm going round the bend. I know I responded to Pete's post but it's gone, I think I said something like "Ah, that explains it then" Actually I'm surprised a bike made in 1973 still had Whitworth threads and spanner sizes. When I started work we used to get about 10 calls a week about "I can't get this bolt to fit my engine" This was the pre BMC MG engines which had metric threads with Whitworth spanners sizes. Reason was that the original Morris Minor engine, as fitted to the MG M-type was a Hotchkiss engine built under licence. The tooling carried on through the L, N, P, Q, R, and T models (the last being the XPAG). Oh, happy days. Quote
