FLAT.ERIC Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 Rover V8 I want to upgrade to a baffled sump. V8 Developments offer a sump which is 3inches deep. With 4 trap doors surrounding the oil pick up. Cost is £369 (sounds expensive but is this what I need(?)) Reasons 1) increases ground clearance 2) prevent oil surge. (I shall shortly be buying a032r tyres and taking part in a track day, and been concerned with a number of posts). 1) Does anyone have any experience these sumps, 2) how many trap doors do I need? 3) alternatives. S8ight Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 £369 whats it made of ? at that price if i decide i want one think i'll make it myself Quote
markg Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 havent measured it but the gearbox hoop looks lower than the sump! Quote
Graham Posted July 3, 2003 Posted July 3, 2003 I've got the shallow sump. In fact, the bell housing is now the lowest, probably about 15mm lower than the sump. The gearbox hoop is a little higher, probably about 10mm lower than the sump. It is made of steel. Handy cos it's flat so the engine doesn't topple over when it's out of the car You say you want to increase ground clearance, in which case it's the one to go for. The alternative would be the normal trapdoor/baffled sump (normal shape on the outside but with the trap doors inside). This is cheaper at around £160. I ran one of these on my old car with no problems, on 32r's. I never ran the car that low and it had touched the floor a few times. I think both types have 4 traps. Other alternatives - only other one is dry sump but that really would be expensive, then again, probably not as expensive as doing a trackday with 32r's and a standard sump! Quote
FLAT.ERIC Posted July 5, 2003 Author Posted July 5, 2003 Thanks Graham, low level baffled sump definitely sounds the way to go. But before I bite the bullet and spend the money, are there any other companies I should phone first. Quote
S8ight Posted July 5, 2003 Posted July 5, 2003 would imagine someone in fabrication would be able to help you. the top plate on the standard V8 sump is only held in place with a few welds. Quote
Graham Posted July 5, 2003 Posted July 5, 2003 I remembered Ian Crocker has one of the standard baffled sumps on his website... Ians website You can try all the usual V8 people (V8D, JE, etc) but I expect you will find the prices are very similar and you will more than likely find they are all using the same components anyway. Sure, you can do it yourself, if you get it wrong you'll know when your oil pressure light comes on Quote
S8ight Posted July 5, 2003 Posted July 5, 2003 loved the last pic of the home made sump suppose as a DIY guide you could use this as a 'how it shouldnt end up looking' pic Quote
