sparky21 Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 I am looking for a trailer for the XTR2, I have not got a massive budget, and I know nothing about car trailers, obviously am guessing I need a tilt and slide??? should I get a brian james or ifor williams? also what model does everyone think would be most suitable? remebering the XTR2 only has minimal clearance... Many Thanks Marc Quote
sparky21 Posted April 16, 2011 Author Posted April 16, 2011 Is a brian james, minno max any good?? Quote
Mark Stanton Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 Yep good trailer but check overall bed width and that you have extra long ramps Woodford and PRG also make good quality trailers and sometimes a bit cheaper than Brian James (who simply have a bigger PR budget) Twin axle porbably more stable to tow than single axle and far better in event of a tyre blow out and can easily run on 3 wheels Quote
sparky21 Posted April 16, 2011 Author Posted April 16, 2011 Great advise cheers Mark.... now another question.... I passed my test in September 1997 and have got a feeling I am legaly not allowed to tow a trailer??? or am I wrong, someone told me if you pass after the 1st Jan 1997 you have to take another test? Quote
Mark Stanton Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 Think you could be right ......... I'm way too old and have had licence for many years but check out the DVLA website it should give you full info for limitations and ages for towing Quote
sparky21 Posted April 16, 2011 Author Posted April 16, 2011 just have and the person that told me was right!!!! lol Quote
Mark Stanton Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 Have a read of this null its not null but a link to direct.gov stuff Quote
Rednop1 Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 i also passed my test in september 1997 and having been stopped many time but the police towing plant/car trailers and never had a problem this was before i passed my lgv Quote
BigRuss Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 If you passed after Jan 1997, then you are more limited on what you can tow, but a light car trailer is still possible. In a nutshell, there is a total weight limit of 3.5tons, and the max possible weight of the trailer and load can't weigh more than the car. Assuming the trailer weighs 400kg, and the XTR2 is 500kg, you should be fine with a normal car without needing to do the extra test. I bought a Brian James minno, and they downplated it for me, so I could tow it with our family car, even though it could carry heavier weights than I need. Quote

Ah russ that is great, I did a bit more looking into it and looks like your spot on, and your pretty much bang on with weights so even if trailer and westfield come to 1 ton as lond as the tow vehicle is over the 1 ton mark then it is ok??? Do you think the minno will get the XTR2 on it??? Thanks Marc Quote
Pistol Pete Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 Just remember that mid engines car generally have to be loaded on facing the other way in order to some nose weight to give you a nice stable outfit. Quote
peterg Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 QUOTE Do you think the minno will get the XTR2 on it??? Very much doubt it but the only way is to measure the overall width of your car and compare it to bed width quoted for the trailer models You'll need extra long ramps as well even loading your car 'backwards on' as the nose will scrape once the rear is up on the trailer (BJ, PRG etc can supply these, try and get them made in aluminium or they'll weigh a ton Quote
sparky21 Posted April 17, 2011 Author Posted April 17, 2011 thanks peterg, can you or anyone else think what is the lowest tilt trailer on the market, only as the minno looked pretty flat to me, I will check width though, and i had thought that it would have to go on backwards otherwise it'll nose off everytime and that would be a pain in the ......... Mark Stanton Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 with location of engine in XTR its best to reverse onto trailer anyway make sure you get one with a winch to make it even easier and see post 3 Quote
wilsonch Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I have a woodford twin axel for mine 12' long 6'6" wide. The vast majority of the smaller trailers (minno's and alike ) are just too narrow. Some trailers have 'sides' on them that you are likely to damage bodywork on as well. I had to buy some extra long ramps to stop grounding everytime it went on and off, (they are 10' now) but as they slide underneath this isnt a problem. As to which way round it goes, i was always under the impression that the weight on the tow ball was very important. so putting scales under the jockey wheel it should be 80-kg ish. If you put the XTR on facing backwards it massively overloads this weight. SO i always put mine on facing forwards. The only issue i have found is the big daft wing on the back seams to unbalance the trailer at 'higher' speeds. Please, someone tell me if the towball weight thing is a load of rubbish, its just what i've read. chris Quote
