Dibby Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Again, it's your choice and your money to spend but I'd find a V8 in a 7 based kit a bit too much. Big, heavy engine up front, no weight over the back wheels and too much torque = endless wheelspin. It all goes round in stages and fashions, V8s were all the rage, bike engines were in and they're falling out of fashion a bit, at one stage you had to have Zetec, then everything had to be Duratec ... just pick what you like the look and feel of, the joy of kits are they are so customisable you can have exactly what you want, don't let fashions and other people's preferences cloud your views Quote

I think that may be an over-zealous generalisation, to be frank. I may be talking out of my second mouth here but I would guess there is not such a weight differential between my engine (iron block) with all the paraphernalia that is attached and a V8 engine (aluminium block). My car has more torque than a Politician but I don’t seem to leave black stripes everywhere although, if uncontrolled, it can. It is how you control the right pedal for maximum forward propulsion. I am sure the BEC gives many pleasures in the driving experience but I have only been out in one such car and I found it awful. It guess it is great if you like “light switch; on-off” driving but certainly not for me. I would despair driving one in a traffic jam or similar. Having said that, my tin-top is a SAAB and I drive my Westfield the same as a SAAB driver, so you can see where I am coming from. Make sure you go out in one before making the ultimate choice. Just my thoughts. Quote
davidgh Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Currently being the owner of both -- I've owned a Striker CEC for seven years, but over the winter I put bike engine in it and bought a Westy to accommodate the 1600VX. My view: the Striker is now exhilarating, and very fast. It's also brutal to drive and very noisy. The Westy is definitely a bit slower, but much more relaxing to drive. Conclusion: -- If you want to drive SWMBO to the pub, or go on any tour over 10 miles, get another CEC. -- If your main interest is to blitz everyone else at track days (whilst running the risk of being thrown out at lunch-time for being too loud), a BEC could be the perfect vehicle. Just my thoughts. I found the bike engine on/ off to begin with but after a bit of getting used to it's not that hard in traffic. Just have to gentle on the throttle and balance the revs. I drive a diesel BMW for a daily drive and the bike engine couldn't be any more different, changing gear at 2k rpm in the diesel whereas the Honda CBR kangaroos below 4k. Diesel's been remapped and it's amazing the difference comparing 200bhp in a 2-tonne lardy estate with 130bhp in a 450kg rollerskate. But like you say, personal preferences and all, I'd happily drive a car engined Westie, it's just this one came up for sale at a price that was too good to resist and I've not seen a build like it, built by an ex McLaren engineer who had taken home spares from the parts bins by the look of it. Granted it's not as smooth as a car engined Westie, but if I want smooth I'll take the BMW and wouldn't sell the Westie on for the sake of getting a CEC. Quote
