Wiring Question: Edis4

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Getting around to putting the EDIS 4 and megajolt in the Westie.

Problem is that I know next to noting about auto electrics and am too poor to pay someone to do it. :(

I found a wiring diagram for EDIS 4 and it helps:

EDIS 4

I think I can source my +ve from the wire running into the original coil pack +ve terminal to provide the +ve supply to pin 8 on the EDIS; the +ve ineed supply on the new (Zetec coil pack); and also the +12V infeed on the megajolt.

Where I am more confused is do I ground to the chassis or into the -Ve running from the original coil pack.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Jack

More stupid questions to follow.

Hi Jack,

What I did was to do is select a suitable grounding point to which all the Megajolt componants could be earthed.

At the end of the process I eventually joined all the ground wires together and used one of the holes into which the coil mounting bracket was bolted to earth the whole system - EDIS, Megajolt and TPS.

HTH :)

Thanks Jumpjet.

The bit that has been confusing me is the -ve wire from the original cvh coilpack.

I didn't understand why this runs into a bundle of hidden away wiring instead of being grounded into the main location that everything else is grounded.  I didn't originally build the car.

I assume that the -Ve coil wiring (from the original coil should be disregarded altogether (although I might ground it also).

I'll just ground everything else to the one point.

I am having an irrational fear of cooking the ECU and EDIS, but you've put my mind at rest a little bit more.

BTW.

I got an old Ford loom with connectors to make the wiring easier.

I assume that I can cut off the cam position sensor wiring to make it tidier. This isn't required for spark only?

Also the Fleabay loom although cheap isn't shielded (for the VR sensor). Is this a requirement. I assume he shielding refers to wire running under the sheathing - This being wired to pin 7 on the EDIS?

Thanks for the reply. Rgds Jack.

The shielding bit is a screened cable type -like microphone cable, that has a  cover around the inner cose of mesh. It helps prevent noise pickup for the sender and should be connected to earth at one end only. worth doing the same for the TPS. Suitable cable on fleebay.

You can use the origional coil supply for edis, megajolt, coli pack

Im not sure of the old coil wiring on your car, but *if* there is an earth there you can ground it .  Check it is an earth tho and not a lead from the dizzy/ignition module! (this maybe the negative connection you mention) The car may also have a rev counter pick from the old coil too.

The new coil pack itself does not have a an earth connection, only a live and two connections from the edis to fire each half ( its two coils in one box)

My X/flow had a supply to the old single coil and a black white wire for the rev counter. The other coil connection went to a lucas ignition module which "fired" the coil through that connection. Depending on your CVH there will be similary some form of module -possibly even within the dizzy or it will going to the points, again at the dizzy.

There may be bodges around this area by previous owners......

You don't need the cam sensor wiring, and can take a feed from the EDIS connection for your rev counter as shown on this:

edis etc

(Mega jolt is just taking the place of the EEC IV module which does the ign advance on the origional car.)

Note the colours for the wires on the edis connector should follow through to the coil pack -so its easy to get that bit right :) ditto if you have bits of wire on the crank sensor connector and edis plug -so thats easy.

Dont forget to use the digital outs to make yourself a shift light
