Another newbie here, Hi Peeps....

Having just sold my ST24, I'm on the look out for another speed machine :-)...

I'm looking to build a Westfield or a Cobra, but to do this one would need a garage. To this end I'm thinking about getting a metal type, but what size????? what is the smallest biuld space I can get away with???

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

The bigger the better is the best policy.   I built mine in a standard single garage, but found myself wheeling it outside to do most things once it got to the rolling chassis stage.

you may get condensation problems with a metal garage, a wooden one might be better ;)

Whatever sort of garage you end up with, make sure it has plenty of power sockets and lots of light.  I fitted some flourescent tubes to my garage and it made a world of difference.  Painting the walls white and the floor grey also helped keep things nice and bright.

Once you get the car to the rolling chassis stage then life becomes a little easier as you can move the car about and compensate for cozy work conditions.

Oh, and if you're thinking about doing any of this over the winter then think about investing in a small heater.  And if you get lots of condensation maybe hire a dehumidifier.  Nothing worse than a cold damp work environment to put you off spending much time out there building, esp. when there's a warm house with a comfy sofa, TV and beer to distract you !!

So the bigger the better, lots of light & heat... Metal types may get condensation problems....

Next questions?

Has anyone got any pictures of a westie in maroon???

:)

and... yeah on a good day the St24 was quite quick  ???

also metal garages are hard to put nails in for when you want to hang bits on the wall!

I think a westfield is about 5 foot by 11 foot? Much easier to fit round in a narrow garage as the main body is much narrower than the wheels (unlike a cobra etc). My garage is about 92inchs wide and I certainly would not want anything narrower to build a car in but I think it would be ok.

dont forget Sedsy anything can be quick if the hill is big enough

A Westfield's dimentions are

wheel base 2335mm

front track 1311mm

rear track 1330mm

overall length 3540mm

overall width 1560mm

I'm also going to build mine in a single garage with arround 500mm to spare ether side mmmm tight!!

I built mine in a modern "New House" (Read tiny) garage, approx 8'6" wide.  I also didn't have the luxury of rolling it out, because my drive was bl**dy steep.  Managed OK though.  Most of the time I left the wheels off to give me a bit more room to get past, only problem with that was I occasionally bashed my legs on the wheel studs.

. . . what Nick M said :D . . . but a big heater !  In the winter it's very difficult to get enough enthusiasm to go out.

Building mine in a single garage with no mains power - it's still possible and great fun but I do have a second garage for storage.

Thanks guys.....

I'm off to find a suitable garage :)
