I need to source a generator for our local sailing club as it has no mains connections. Diesel sounds a good option as it should be more robust and more economical. However I'm worried the noise as I won't be thanked for dissrupting the peace & quiet!

Does anyone have any experience of diesel generators like this one?

Kva Diesel Generator Kipor KDE6700TA

Needs to be a fair size for site lighting, cooking, water heating and band equipment etc. Plus a large one is some deterrant to it being stolen (we'll bolt it to the floor in an enclosure anyway).

Thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

I would steer clear of the ones used at Fukushima Nuclear powered plant.

They packed in after 30 minutes!

Rich, that generator you've linked to looks identical to the one we use at the WSCC weekend event at Curborough (it's provided by SDLCC) and if you've ever been around when I've fired it up on Sunday morning you'll know how noisy it is  :0

It works well enough though and a tank of diesel will last a weekend of powering the paddock office, traffic lights and PA systems  :t-up:

Thanks Pete

Hmm - that's what I'm worried about. I'll look at petrol ones as well, but diesel seems sensible for something that gets left idle quite a lot and doesn't get much maintenance. A big thick box over the top perhaps!

doubt that would be anywhere near big enough for your needs

5KVA will be the peak (max) output

Judging by the spec of the latest 5KVA model

Actually rated 1.5 KVA contstant output  :t-up:

We guestimated about 3KW would be enough (it's a small place)

I'm not so clear on KVA - if KVA = volts x amps then if we want a 240 volt supply we'll have 20.8 amps available - should be enough.

If (I've read somewhere) 760W = 1HP then for 3KW we need a 4hp generator

However if this example is 1.5KVA constant output then then that should give 6A supply which isn't much.

Does that seem right?
