Chris.B Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Although out of the country again - spotted this on BBC4 at 9pm (UK) tonight Grand Prix- The Killer Years Have got my son to record it. Focusing on Jackie Stewart's campaign to make F1 safer after the 60's & 70's carnage. Quote
pistonbroke Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Plus F1 60th anniversary same channel 8 pm Quote
Fat Albert Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 The Doco at 21:00 is another by Mark Stewart's (Jackie's son) company who also made the Hill, Clark & Stewart bio tributes that are generally well regarded Quote
Chris.B Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 Just watched it on iPlayer thru a proxy. David Purley's attempts to save Williamson brought me to tears. I recall that first time round, I was 14 at the time & it hurts even more watching it now. Quote
RedditchJay Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 its hard watching at times BUT it got us to where we are today......... Quote
Rory's Dad Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Two great programmes Thanks for the info. Rory's Dad Quote
Doug Dastardly Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Just watched a recording of them. Great TV especially the killer years. Utterly gobsmacked. The level of danger and death the drivers, the teams and spectators accepted as normal is stupefing by todays standards. Just shows how soft we've all become, which is not such a bad thing. Highly recommended if they're on again. Quote
Chris.B Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 The killer years is amazing - you MUSTwatch it before it dissapears from iPlayer. Didnt know the one about Jackie Stewart upside down at Spa for 20 mins with fuel all over him until Graham Hill came along, then on a stretcher with people smoking nearby !! Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Has this been on before? I seem to recall it a few months back? I have just watched a bit on iPlayer and having seen the harrowing footage four or so minutes in, I realise that it has not been on before - at least I haven't seen it - I would never have forgotten that. It is both compelling and repelling at once. I know I am going to have to watch it... Quote
jonclancy Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I watched The Killer Years on iPlayer this afternoon. Sobering stuff. It seems Stewart did a great job galvanizing the drivers and standing up to commercial and social pressure. The Purley/Williamson clip is just desperate. He really tried his best... Quote
pistonbroke Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 "The Killer Years" was a good programme but it seemed to focus solely on the JYS years, plus a lot of it was factually incorrect. Though it did bring home the inherent danger of the sport in those days those guys new the risks involved and were prepared to take there chance for the sake of their sport . The sickening thing was the seemingly complete indifference of the circuit owners and the almost none existance of on track safety. Yet that was accepted as being part of the job , most never gave it a second thought Put into context, it wasn't just motor sport that suffered from a high death toll, in those days the mortality rate in a lot of other sports was pretty high too. Just like climing mountains , bob sleigh , sky diving , deep sea diving , boxing etc. The main reason for doing those sports was the thrill of the risk factor BTW Jackie Young Stewart never split his skin once during all his days as a racer Quote
