Dont think the petrols are going to be cheep to fix Ian. Think of a modern direct injected petrol as a diesel running on petrol. Modern petrol engines are going to be very costly to repair more so than a common rail diesel would be my guess. VW have developed a 1400cc super charged turbo charged engine that makes 170 BHP  to get round the up and coming emission laws.

The modern petrol engine will have variable spark plug gaps to help with power and emissions they are also going down the road of  electronic thermostats to allow the ecu to control engine temp. This will mean when full power is required the ecu will open the stat and run the engine cooler. When the car is cruising the stat will close and run the engine hotter for better emissions.

So if you think that petrol is going to be the way to cheaper motoring think again.

Electronic thermostats are already here. As are on demand oil and water pumps... Yes, the oil pump which intentionally stops is with us.

Electric turbochargers will be next. They are the real world version of the snake oil electric superchargers on eBay. The idea is a small electric motor can spin the turbo up earlier and faster to recover the tranisent response that is going to go to the wall because of all the emissions crap.

Sadly the end is night for the IC engine. I think Jaguar have given us a glimpse of the future with the C75.

Edit: Oh, and the holygrail, that is the camless engine.

Yep did not say they wasn't Martin. I think they are on VAG engine cars if I am not mistaken. Dont know about others yet. Just trying to highlight how things are going. Its only a matter of time before 6 or 7 year old cars are scrapped for management problems. These so called emission pushed advances will scrap cars early due to economics. How can that be green

It isn't green but the legislators are not technical people and are lobbied to death by the green movement purporting to be experts and the manufacturers respond favourably as they can sell new cars.

They spend millions on lobbiests to get their own way. as for 6-7 year old cars being scrapped, that is already happening with things like a clutch change on some vehicles where they need dual mass etc and especially if they are high mileage cars.

Listening to the radio today Freinds of the Earth were saying that motoring in real terms is 10 pecent cheaper than it was 10 years ago where as public transport now costs 50% more. I cannot see how they work that out if taking repairs into account.

The emissions contraints aren't always positive....

When catalytic converters came in the early 90's, the manufacturers were just starting to get lean burn technology to really work, and actually save fuel, that is burn less fuel  for same output.

So what did legislation do? Kill that off, bring in compulsary CAT's that needed more fuel to run - less economical. Don't really get that.... I'm sure the mining companies won't have been involved in lobbying.....

How green was that?  I'm sure that some of the modern emissions requirements are doing similar things.

Thanks for the info on the urea. Used on Peugeot TDi's of a few years ago.  Also at service to clean out the particulate filter if required.

I read an article somewhere a few years ago about enviromentalists moan and b***hing about the pollution sourrounding a mining town in the artic circle.

The really funny bit? It was a platinum mine..

Biggest customers? Catalitic convertor manufactures...

How long will it be before we're all removing our Zetecs and Pintos and replacing them with electric wheels!! :-)

Imagine all the boot space where the engine used to be
