Losna Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Hi again! I've finally got my Megabusa, which is now sitting in the workshop to be thoroughly checked. I've got a few issues, and I'll post them separately, if this is not a problem. First issue: Differential I'd like to know which kind of differential I've got. I've been told (by the guy who sold me the car) it's a SLD. But when in the shop, I rotated one wheel (with the car jacked up), and I noticed that the other wheel didn't rotate at all. 1) Shall I suppose it's an open differential and not a SLD? On the rear cover of the diff I found the following data: DANA 43156 125-00 REV V 0124-97 2) What do all these numbers mean? Someone (I suppose at Westfield) wrote with a feltpen "OIL IN 11-22-2002), and I know that the car was produced in 2002. 3) Which oil shall I put in (I've been told that open diffs and SLD diffs require different oils)? A couple of pics: clink link to enlarge: from below: click link to enlarge: Thank you for your help! Quote
peterg Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 QUOTE But when in the shop, I rotated one wheel (with the car jacked up), and I noticed that the other wheel didn't rotate at all. if it's not an LSD (Limited slip diff) the other wheel would turn in the opposite direction, with LSDs the other side can either not rotate or rotate slowly in the same direction so it's likely to be an LSD QUOTE On the rear cover of the diff I found the following data: DANA 43156 125-00 REV V 0124-97 2) What do all these numbers mean? DANA manufacture diffs so it's just a model number and revision list (for incremental changes) AFAIK Quote
tex Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 looks like the standard westy diff to me - from a freelander? with quaife internals - 3.21 ratio if correct - identical to mine if lsd keep eye on ALL mounting bolts for coming loose - especially the allen head bolts. - if they come loose it could lead to breakages Quote
Blatman Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Find a car park. Do a donut. If it goes beyond 360 degrees and you can keep it going, it's an LSD... Trying to tell what you have by turning one wheel and watching what the other does is pretty futile 'cos an ATB will behave like an open diff when you turn the wheels by hand. A plate type LSD behaves differently and a viscous type LSD behaves differently again... Quote
Losna Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 Thanks for your answers! - I had the mounting bolts tightened: some of them were loose... I suppose this saved me from big expenses in the near future! Very good advice, thanks again! - LSD: I went on track, and although not being able to give it all in (errr.. cold track, old and stone hard tires, noise limit, errr... DRIVER ABILITIES still to be developed ;D) I think it really is a LSD: all the wheelspin I experienced was on BOTH wheels... - SLD/LSD: I remembered the three letters of the acronym, but I misaligned them due to my lazyness (didn't look for it on the translator and directly translated from the italian "Self Locking Differential) ;D Quote

GreigM Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 As above, identical to the diff in my hayabusa - looks like a freelander with 3.21 ratio - so will be LSD. Quote
