Bananaman Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I recentlet bought an engine that was advertised as having ARP rod bolts I took the sump off to check and there is no ARP on the end of the bolts as i'd expect, this would lead me to beleive that a few other thngs about the spec of the engine arn't right?? Can anybody confirm that ARP bolts should be spamped ARP on the heads before i contact the seller? Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 All of the ARP bolts that I have seen have splined heads and are not hexagon headed Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 AFAIK, all the ARB Rod bolts have 12 point heads Picture of standard + ARP style bolt Quote
Captain Colonial Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Every ARP bolt I've seen has ARP on it. Bolt Photo ARP Catalogue Page Quote
peterg Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 what they said - not sure of bright finish though as I've only ever seen black ones... but they weren't for an XE Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 CC - your photo shows a spline headed bolt! Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 what they said - not sure of bright finish though as I've only ever seen black ones... but they weren't for an XE I know I've had the plain black for bearing caps and flywheel bolts, edited my last post to avoid confusion. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Just an extra thought, the ARP rod bolts for the XE are best installed using a stretch gauge rather than by torque wrench; to that end, I'm sure I remember reading in the ARP bumpf that there is a dimple in each end of the bolt to ensure correct alignment of the gauge. Mind you, I have heard people saying "ARP bolts" when all they mean is a heavy duty/uprated bolt, just like using the name Sellotape or Hoover instead of the real names. Quote
Arm Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Plus I get the impression the rod MAY not be in the right way round. Is the extra shoulder on the rod pointing towards the flywheel? I'm acting from memory here - I thought it should point towards the flywheel but could be wrong. Quote

Jenko Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Just did a search on Kamax... http://www.kamax.com/en/products/engine-fasteners/ My guess is they are not standard VX ones, so maybe said person did indeed do as Gadgetman mentioned. Also, just found this which may be of interest: http://www.turbobuick.com/forums....ts.html Quote
Crash test dummy Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 They look to be marked 10.9 which is the standard grade bolt for XE rods/mains. Even proprietary socket head bolts are usually 12.9 grade and "ARP" bolts are of an even higher grade (tensile strength) than 12.9. So I would say that IMHO you have been well undersold. Quote
perksy Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Definetly not ARP's Happy to be corrected, but think there just standard XE ones tbh Quote
Bananaman Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 Thank's guys, looks like standard bolts then Quote
