gixermark Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Hi Guys, heading off to Sunnyvale this wk end with a new job.... not sure how much time i will have in the evenings etc... but will want to explore a bit on the wk end i am there.. I'll have a car/GPS... anyone been around the area and recommend worthwhile sights etc ? maybe one day based in San Francisco.. and one around the bay area ?? Quote
peterg Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Loads to see in San Francisco and one day won't be enough... all this is from 18 years ago so it 'may' have changed a bit Chinatown is really interesting Pier 39 get a chilli dog with curly fries - yummy! Drive down Lombard Street (only at about 5mph but just a bit of fun) here Further out (couple of hours drive), try and get to Carmel - where Clint lives - if you can and watch the sunset over the Pacific Monterey is nice too with a huge aquarium Pacific Coast Highway has beautiful views and for fairly weird, visit Gilroy south of San Jose on Highway 101 "Garlic capital of the world" and sample such delights as garlic ice cream and garlic wine Quote
gixermark Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 it all sounds good........ apart from the last line !! garlic ice cream & wine is just wrong !! Quote
pistonbroke Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Hire a Mustang and do a "Bullet " impression Quote
bhouse Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Loads and loads and loads in San Francisco - don't forget the wine growing areas to the north in Napa Valley etc. Plenty of wineries with tours and tasting sessions. Let a friend drive or take the train... If you're into electronics there's a great Frys in Sunnyvale at 1077 East Arques. When you've spent all week in the typical air conditioned windowless Silicon Valley office a walk in the woods is always welcome and there are some fantastic national parks in the strip of forest that runs up the coast - 10 minutes drive from Sunnyvale. The Mystery Spot just north of Santa Cruz - pure US hokum but huge fun! Great wooden roller coaster on the Santa Cruz boardwalk. It's a great place to spend a while - how long are you there for? Oh - and brush up on your earthquake survival skills... Quote
Trevori Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Laguna Seca International Raceway is close to Monterey. Approx 100 miles South of Sanfrancisco Has to be done. Physical Address: 1021 Monterey-Salinas Hwy Salinas, CA 93908 Quote
ljsanders Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Spent a good 18 months in the SF/San Jose area. Ditto for all thats said so far. Seeing the awesome Corkscrew at Laguna Seca has to be done. Also: Napa Valley for wine tasting just north of San Francisco. Yosemite National Park about 4 to 5 hours east Lake Tahoe about 4 hours away. Alcatraz Highway 1 cruise south of Monterey The Mystery Spot near Santa Cruz (very weird!) Quote

I'll be there for 2 weeks... arrive ~1430 local time this sunday... so only really have the middle wk end as i fly out towards the end of the next wk Trevor - you know me too well that does sound lime an option.... will have to google it to see if anything is on sanders - yes... liking teh sound of the wine region too - maybe have to leave that till another time tho - will have to look into this mystery spot !!
