I heard a brief section of an interview recently (Radio Two  I think). During which I heard mention of an insurance company offering "Pay as you go" insurance. I believe this was aimed at young drivers but wondered if it might work in our field and if there were any companies out there offering it.

Has anyone heard of this?

i think its somthing to do with having a blackbox fitted to the car so your miles can be monitord

but think its still a new scheme, been talked about for ages now but never seen it being offered anyware

I fear the thought of having a black box wired into the car, logging where you are and how fast you've been driving may put many kit car owners off having it if it were an option for us.

Kit car insurance is incredably cheep compared to regular tin-tops and the premiums already consider that we drive limited mileage in normally good weather so I can't see the same benifits would exist for us as maybe a young new driver.

LV are offering something similar - I think you can find info on these policies on Martin Lewis' website, moneysavingexpert as he was on about them a while back.

i looked into it a few yrs back for xswmbos tow car. it wasnt really much cheaper. we had to say roughly how the car would be used each month. so times/type journey what kind of roads etc. they then worked out your monthly amount based on this. so if you more or less did what you said you paid a certain amount if less or none you paid less.

where it got you was you still need to insure the car for fire/theft which is contantly running and legal protection etc. so basically each month you had a standing charge as well as what you used.

in the end it wotked out something silly like 60 more to have a normal 12K pr year policy where you could use what you wanted. rathe than the very limiting PAYG policy on much less miles

For the ~£160 a year it costs, it just isn't worth not insuring it all year, just in case the worst happens to the garage or any low lifes decide they might like one very similar to yours.

As im going to be taking the plunge soon(ish) and buy myself a westy. Just wondered if anyone has tried a few insurance companies, and who came out with the best quote? Is the norm to go fully comp? What about milage?3-5000 SOunds about right yeh?

I know its like how longs a piece of string but what sort of price could I expect to pay for something similar to a 200hp redtop or duratec? Im 29 no points on license and had no claims.
