Guest Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 Since I began using my car every day it has inevitably rained (a lot ) and so I have had to resort to driving with the hood up (round town this is necessary since most of the time I'm stationary). During this time I've found it's like being in a bl**** sauna - the screen mists up so I turn on the heater to try and clear it (which it doesn't do very well because of the high moisture content) and it just gets hotter & hotter. In a normal car you'd probably open a window but the side-screens don't afford such a luxury My question is: has anyone found a good method for getting some fresh air into the car? Even when moving, the flow is very limited and it can get stuffy. What I want is some kind of roll-down window or a decent vent of some kind. Any ideas?? Please.... (As it is my every-day car I don't have the option of just taking a tin top) - Dan. Quote
hilux Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 Ditch yer carpets they are the only possible reason that you need a hood Quote
Mark Stanton Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 Get yourself some all in one bike waterproofs, ditch the carpet and hood Once you've purchased said items - the sun will continue to shine Quote
gregh Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 I can't help answer your questions, but you've convinced me not to get a hood for my motor! I was worried as I drive it to/from trackdays that I book in advance, so one day I'm going to get wet! I have a decent pair of waterproof trousers and top, with a tonneau and change of clothes fingers crossed I'll last a drive from Leeds to venue, a day of tracking and back again despite the weather! I intend to take an umbrella to put up in traffic queues BTW I wish my heater actually gave out heat!! Maybe it does more with the hood up!! regards greg Quote
neilwillis Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 I got caught in a thunder storm on the way to SVA. The only problem I had was keeping the inside of the windscreen clear, and that has been sorted now - rain-x - As long as you're moving, the rain goes over your head. Someone said here a while back (can't be to do a search for it) "there's no such thing as bad weather - only inappropriate clothing" Ditch the hood, get some rain-x and drive al-fresco Quote
Bryan C Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 I bought my factory built Westie in 1999, went back for a factory bolt check (200mls?) and then set off for France for a boys weekend. Hit a monsoon just outside Caen and after trying to work out how the hood frame goes up ( metal origami says it all ), I zipped up the tonneau and stood in a phone box for 1 1/2 hrs for the rain to pass by. Met my son in Rennes with 25mm of water in the bottom of the car. Memorable soakings were MIRA 2000 ( resulting in pneumonia ) and Le Mans 2001. Dry miles only - Boll*x Use it or lose it. Guest Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 ditch the carpetThe carpets were removed a few weeks ago after being soaked through leakage (which is still being fixed...), but anyway, what about the seats? I've got lardy ones and I can imagine they're gonna soak up the water Is this the case? Maybe I'll experiment and tip a bucket'o water on 'em Also, can't look too sitting in your Westy like a drowned rat in a downpour! Quote
Blatman Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 Someone said here a while back (can't be to do a search for it) "there's no such thing as bad weather - only inappropriate clothing" It was me! Oooooohhhhh the ironies........ And I'm with Mark and Greg. Get some decent waterproof clothes, ditch the carpets and the hood, and drill some 4mm holes in each corner of the floor. No problem......oh, I've been a biker for 20 years, so don't expect any sympathy from me just 'cos you might get a bit wet when it rains...... Quote
JonnyBoy Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 if you unclip the bottom of the sidescreen you can fold it up on itself and it allows loads of air thru when stationary, good way for me to clear the smell of fuel and such from the cabin. Quote
damianc Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 I'll support the "ditch the hood & carpets" contingent. I drive mine no hood, no screen, no sidescreens, no heater 365 days a year with no real problems. Things dry out quickly this time of year anyway Quote
Phil W Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 I had the same problem the first time I used mine in the wet with the hood up and so installed a valve in the water inlet pipe to the heater- now I can have cool air to demist the screen which prevents the sauna syndrome !!!!! Quote
neilwillis Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 but anyway, what about the seats? Get some bucket seats Quote
Bananaman Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 good way for me to clear the smell of fuel and such from the cabin. Why would you want to do that then. Call yourself a petrol head. Quote
Phssthpok Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 ......if it rains .................accelerate Quote
