wozzer Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 Help For months nay years I have been saving for my Westfield kit, never thinking I may not have enough room in my garage to build the thing. Anyway I finaly thought to measure my garage and it only measures 2500mm x 4500mm bearing in mind the listed size of a westfield is 1610mm x 3660mm DO I HAVE ENOUGH ROOM TO BUILD MY KIT ? I have the use of a mates garage localy, so all parts will be stored there, so my garage will be used solely for building the kit (hopefully). Has anyone built in a similar size garage? If so How did it go? Any advice would be much appreciated Thanks Warren Quote
Pmaltby Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 hey wozzer, i built mine in a singls garrage and their was just enough room get round the car. I got built the car to rolling chassis stage on the stands westfield supply then dropped the car onto wheels then finished the built whil it was on the floor. Only difficult bit is getting the engine in on the crane and under the garage door but possible. I think my garage is about the same size as the one you have but not able to get to it at the moment as the drive is like a building site at the moment! carnt wven get the car out to play with it unless i make it into a 4X4! AndyMoss Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 Built mine in a single garage too. Not really a problem - just clear out all the other junk first One tip is that if you build it on the westfield stands I would start off with the backend of the car at the door end of the garage, as this is the heaviest end ( until you put the engine in the front ). You might want to use an engine hoist to help lift it off the stands - you won't be able to get the hoist in if you have it the other way around. Then once you are at the rolling chassis stage lift it down off the stands and put the engine end nearest the door ready to fit the engine and gearbox. Quote
zvezdochka Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 Built mine in single garage about 4800 long and 2750 wide. Similar tight squeeze with engine crane and up and over garage door. (remember to have front of car facing out unless you roll chassis outside to install engine) Only other comment is try to leave space for bench of some sort, especially for building up scuttle (unless its an aero screen with no wipers and heater). I made bench from 2 cheap work mates with piece of thick ply screwed down. HTH Rick Quote
markg Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 i dont have a garage! so i am building mine in the kitchen! although i will have to take the window out to get it out when its finished! Quote
wozzer Posted May 23, 2003 Author Posted May 23, 2003 I only intend to build the car up to the engine stage as I intend to get the engine fitted by raw engineering, so do you think I may have enough room? I realy want to build the car myself . I dont want to buy one ready built Quote
wozzer Posted May 23, 2003 Author Posted May 23, 2003 so do you recon I should go for it and order the kit ?? PS I wont be fitting the engine as I intend to get RAW to fit me a Toyota job !!!!! Thanks Wozzer Quote
scott beeland Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 Built mine mostly outside.....get on with it man......... Quote
Kit Car Electronics and Essex AO Posted May 24, 2003 Posted May 24, 2003 A handy tip is to hang the body tub from the ceiling, and you can then also keep boxes under the raised car. Quote
neilwillis Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 Or just have Westfield time the availability of the body tub for when you're ready for it. Go for it, I have just about finished mine, and although at times you end up spitting your dummy out, overall it's been a worthwhile project. Just one last hurdle to overcome, and it'll be on the road. Quote
wozzer Posted May 25, 2003 Author Posted May 25, 2003 Thanks guys, I guess I'll just have to get on with it , as I say I dont intend to fit the engine and I have the use of another gagage to store any parts untill ready to fit, so I hope I wont have too many problems (fingers crossed). Thanks again Warren Quote
steve_m Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 wozzer, I'm building mine in a single garage. Some things that I found very useful were to paint the walls white to reflect light, couple of coats of garage floor paint, a good bench (long but not too deep to conserve space), a cheap £9 workmate-type bench from B&Q, a heavy vice and an angle grinder. These things have been more useful than I imagined. Quote
steve wilson Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 Make sure before you pick the kit up that you ask westy if they have checked, checked and double checked that all the parts you need/ordered are present so that when you are building it you dont keep throwing the teddy out cos bits are missing. neilwillis Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 Nice thought - shame they don't do that without being asked I'm not going to start on that one again Quote
