Luapno Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Didn't want to hijack Cleggy's tyre rack thread, i want to build a frame for a cover for my Brian James Academy trailer, and hope to get some ideas and photos of some done previously. I have found someone in Coventry to make the cover, just need some ideas for the frame Anyone done somthing similar, i was thinking of making the frame from 30mm x 30mm box section Thanks in advance Paul Quote

John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I've just had one made in 25 x 25 18 gauge box section. Plenty of triangualtion is the key to avoid flex in all directions Also think about how your canvas people will be best be able to cover it without too much trickery Quote
Bananaman Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Take a look here for ideashttp://www.gtmotorsportuk.com/Trailer%20Gallery/ www.gtmotorsportuk.com I had this guy make me a cover a few years ago and it was a fantastic job, he's got it off to a fine art! Quote
peterg Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 A few years ago I was going to get something similar made for my PRG Sport trailer and sent Mike Gardner (of the GT Motorsport company linked to earlier) a rough drawing/spec and was quoted about £1150 from memory, it was similar to the last photo in that gallery and was to have a tyre rack and winch platform plus a frame in which to store the EZup shelter built into it. I've had a look but can't find the drawing now so probably lost in one of our many house moves.... Quote
Luapno Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 I had spotted the gt motorsport site and have some good ideas from them. I want to build the frame myself then get the cover made. There is a company in coventry called canvas & rope (or something very similar) who seem to be quite reasonble. Thanks for the replies so far Quote
Bananaman Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Fair enough if you want to build yourself a frame but i'd check that the people who cover it use decent quality matterials and know what ther doing as i have had a cover made for a previous trailer and it wasn't a patch on the GT one on the following trailer! Problems i had were sagging roof (which collected water) which i think was due to lower grade canvas that stretched, the previous cover that the traier had did not suffer from this. I guess you can add cross bracing and or ali sheet to the roof to help reduce this problem Other problems were with poor quality zips and to few eyelets around the base... Also worth incorporating is zipped pannels in the sides with strapps so you can open the sides for ease of access. Good luck Quote
CedricTheBrave Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 and don't make the edges too sharp as the canvas will tear easily. Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I used Canvas and Ropes for my first cover. It was still going strong after 8 years when I passed the trailer on last October. I think Cam on here has also used them. My new trailer will be covered in ali sheet so that I can lock it Quote

John the owner is into bikes, a nice bloke. Made my frame out of 25mm box, as mentioned brace the corners and it will be plenty strong enough. The works next to our office builds steel buildings so me and one of their lads welded it together one Saturday morning for some beer tokens Here's an old piccy Quote
Luapno Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 Cam, its your fault i am going in this direction having seen you recent post selling your trailer Thanks for the posts so far lots to think about, looking forward to this project Paul Quote
jim_l Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Having pushed one of these around, Id be pondering the implications of doing it in aluminium, strength, impact on laden/unladen weight, towability, cost. Don't know the answers, just think if I was doing it I'd be asking the questions? Also I'd be avoiding a flat or near flat front on the grounds of fuel economy and towability Jim Quote
