Asterix Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 2nd year running the laser has failed (am assuming it's the laser...same symptoms as last time). Have had the box apart, cleaned it out, reassembled it...same issue. Last time (over a year ago) this happened, local repair shop replaced the laser and we got 6 months warranty. Whether they did or did not do the job correctly is not worth chasing IMO. Anyway, son wants an xbox360 elite instead (unsure what, if any, the differences are between bog standard xbox and elite), so question is - is the broken xbox worth anything (preferably trade-in)? RedditchJay Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 not sure.... there are few trade in sites do take faulty xbox's ...... im a PS3 myself and they have suffered gremlins Quote
carpetstu Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I have just paid out £81 to send my lads Xbox back to microsoft for the "ring of death fault" If I had my choice he wouldn't have the crap thing at all Quote
Captain Colonial Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 My teenage grandson (when he was living with us - long story) knackered his Xbox laser as well, mainly through being so cack-handed with his discs, which were scratched and covered in fingerprints and God-knows-what (and best not to ask). I had told him many times what the consequences would be if he didn't take better care of his discs, which he ignored and sure enough, it happened. "What am I going to do?", he asked me hopefully. "Get it repaired when you have saved enough pocket money - I'm not paying for your laziness and lack of care after I told you what would happen," I said, which went down like a lead balloon. Cue much moping and silent treatment (happy days!). Life's a swine, isn't it? What a bad grandparent I am. Quote
stewart pickles Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Isnt the difference just the hard drive size? Ben got the "arcade" first time round, but when that died a death he just got the core and used the drive from the arcade version. I think it depends what Joe wants to do on it - if he's just gaming, the basic should be ok i think, as the games play off the disc rather than the drive but i think for online stuff or downloading games, he'll need the hard drive.... As an aside, the new Xbox looks kinda snazzy, smaller than the current version and much "sleeker"..... Ben was looking at buying a new disc drive for his old one to fix the machine, then sell it on - you can get the disc drive for between around 27 - 45 quid, depending on if its HD (do a search on good old google!!!) Emma pretending to be Stu again.... Quote

Major Stare Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Repair it, sell it and get a PS3 ..... which doesnt have a brick power pack, wireless dongle and RROD but does have a very good BluRay player, free connection to PS Store. Quote
Nomexnomad Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 PS3 is just as unreliable (earlier models) i've one of each both knackered... Oh and just hold your knickers coz a new Xbox is planned for release this year so all your kids are gonne want that instead! Quote
James Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Ive had an x box / xbox 360 for years I traded it all in at christmas for a PS3 IMO a far better system, its quite! no noisy fans, there's no power brick to try to hide, it plays Blu Ray's and DVD's and yes Blu Ray is SOOooooo much better. It also acts as a Multi media center you can go online store photo's, it comes with BBC iplayer instaled along with ITV Player and 4 on demand, I also got the play tv box so I can watch TV through the PS3 and recored programs, you can also down load film's to rent and buy. It does far more than the X box and does it better ive had three x box's and they will all die in time its just what they do. but hey its Microsoft!!! Edited to say playing live also free!!! not £40.00 a year Quote
Blatman Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 James, you need to look at PS3 Media Server too Got PS3 Media Server running on all my PC's to share all my content. Just got to cable up my gaff with some CAT5 and rip ALL my DVD's, CD's and (gasp) old Touring Car VHS's to my NAS. Then I can watch them all on the big screen, via HDMI, across the network, via the PS3... It's just soooooo Quote
Asterix Posted February 16, 2011 Author Posted February 16, 2011 Ta all, a plan's afoot regarding the Xbox (and interesting to note that a newer version is on it's way). Regards the PS3 being located centrally, in the same way that you can stream media across the network, can you do the same for games too? (am guessing not, as you'd have to have a remote gamepad transmitter/ receiver wherever you wanted to play games - but would be glad to hear that such a trans/ rec is available) Quote
Blatman Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Dunno about games, but PS3 Media Server will work for X-Boxes too Quote
