wrightster Posted May 7, 2003 Posted May 7, 2003 My westy has got 2D ignition (weber i think) i have been told (on here) that it is reasonably cheap to update to 3D , i have just spoken to my local rolling road (RE Performance) as i dont fancy tackling this myself (not very technical ) they have said that they have not got the software for weber but once its upgraded to 3d they can set the carbs up - i am a bit lost here on a number of points 1 does the 3d not affect the carb set up (cos if he hasnt got the software how can he set them up) ? 2 can anyone reccomend someone to upgrade this for me - pref in lancashire/merseyside area ? 3 will i see some improvements on performace / economy by upgrading to 3D TIA any more thoughts on this (apart from the fact i am a bit daft ) Quote
fordy Posted May 7, 2003 Posted May 7, 2003 1. Carbs should be set up before the 3D is mapped. Once fuleing is correct, then ignition can be mapped to suit that. Ideally though i would go to somewhere that can do both in the same session. 2. dont know - sorry. 3. full throttle will be the same (unless your current distributor cant reach enough advance) - mid range response will improve as will economy when cruising and on mid throttle - best way to improve economy though is to go to injection. Generally 3D is worth doing, especially if its cheap - i.e your current system may already support it and all you need is a throttle pot (about £40), depends what your current system is. Quote
Karl Woolf Posted May 7, 2003 Posted May 7, 2003 As far as I understand it My westy came with 2D which I upgraded to 3D by adding the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). When my car was built they used the weber kit for (in my case) a VX this involved a set of carbs jetted up to suit a standard engine. In the kit also came the Alpha webcon ignition, preloaded with a map for my VX. The map has 3D information within it, but unless it has a TPS just runs as 2D with the information available. So in effect I would think plugging in a TPS would just fire up the data already in the map. Which is a good job as I believe its difficult to find a RR with the software to do it. so 1. If carbs are okay should be fine. 2. If you order the TPS and look at the instructions, its a fairly simple job to fit. You can do it 3. I personally think, although haven`t tested, that my economy improved and the car ran better for it. (particulary when lifting off) HTH Cheers Karl Quote
chrisbin Posted May 7, 2003 Posted May 7, 2003 I seem to remember I was charged about £26 for a new throttle pot from Emerald... Quote

wrightster Posted May 7, 2003 Author Posted May 7, 2003 Been quoted 45.00 + vat etc for reqd parts from aldon automotive (west midds) does that sound about right ? if i cant fit it do you reckon i should just find a reputable local mechanic to do this for me ? (i will get the carbs set up 1st) Thanks Quote
neilwillis Posted May 7, 2003 Posted May 7, 2003 When you get the carbs set up, hand over the pot to the tuner, and say - would you mind just fitting this please The cheesy smile is the important bit. They may charge you a couple of quid more, but at least if it doesn't work, you can get it fixed for free Quote
chazpowerslide Posted May 7, 2003 Posted May 7, 2003 I've just re-read the destructions for my Alpha kit and it is as the others say. Plugging in the throttle pot allows the ECU to read the data on that channel and the map becomes 3D. Chaz. Quote
markboyce Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 Re Throttle Pots. If you need a spare Throttle Pot or replacement. RS Components sell them for £16.10 +vat. Product Code: 319-310 cheers mark Quote
