Major Stare Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Looking for a 12V-240V inverter to use in my tin top. As i spend a lot of time on the road and at various sites, i need a laptop fully charged. Inverter needs to be able to charge a laptop whilst it is in use as well. Not looking to spend a lot...... any recomendations, the internet is full of them Quote
Gromit Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I`ve had the 500w version running in my van for a couple of years now, probably overkill for a laptop but the smaller ones may be of use. Toolstation invertors Quote
pistonbroke Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 sterling inverter Used one of these for some years with no probs Quote
Blatman Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Wouldn't it be cheaper / easier to buy the proper 12v car charger for the laptop? Assuming the manufacturer makes one of course... Quote
SteveH Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 If it's just for the laptop I would go with a 12v supply, you can get good universal ones that can do varying voltage outputs to suit different laptops. An inverter is a handy thing to have sometimes but some laptops are sensitive to them if they are on charge at the time, one of mine jumps all over the place on the mouse-pad if it's connected or anywhere near the power supply when the inverter is on. NikUK Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Check your laptop power supply and work out how many watts it provides (Power = Voltage x Current in Amps) this will give you the minimum wattage that you will need but I would buy one much bigger than you need. this will allow for surge when you power up your device and make it a bit more versatile for other things. Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, just thought finally Ii could contribute something useful to the board. Quote
Major Stare Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 Have thought about it a bit more today. An inverter could be a handy item to have in the car to run other items when out camping at WSCC events.... camera battery charger, TV/DVD, phone charger etc. I get a new company car in March, so i'll see where the fag lighter sockets are and look at mounting something a bit more heavy duty. Buzz Billsberry Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I've run one for my HP works lap top which I bought for £35 about 6months ago its a 120w & I've had no issues, it also runs lots of other things as well! Buzz Quote
Fat Albert Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Get one, it almost doesn't matter which It is cheaper to buy a 150W inverter & 12v 7amp/hr gel cell than a spare battery for your laptop/camcorder/whatever And it'll run them forever where ever, you do have to be of muscular stature mind Quote
