Check out the ratio calculator on the Quaife web site  ;)  :D

You can enter various options to find something to suit your requirements  :D  ;)

The one with the longest first

So at 7000 rpm you have

62

85

96

114

125ish

What engine is it hooked up to ?  How much torque ??  And what sort of revs will it pull ?  Frequent high (above 7,000rpm) revs and / or lots of torque would mean you might need to think about a Pro box rather than the Clubman one.

As for ratio, I'd recommend the 2.39 first gear.

Anything else will be a pain in the A*** on the road, especially tootling along in slow traffic.  I have a 2.48 first and a 3.92 diff and that's OKish.

Definitely wouldn't go for the 2.04 first if you're planning on doing more road use than track.  To make the most of that you need to swap the diff to a 4.1 ratio otherwise the gearing is just too tall to be practical on the road.

Try Tran-x.  I have just fitted a type 9 straight cut gear kit and am very pleased. The ratios are 2.39 1.69 1.27 1.1 0.92.

This give 54, 76, 100, 128, & 136 @7000 Rpm with 3.92 diff & my tyres (205 50 15).

A slightly taller 5th may have been better as it does not feel much different to 4th and the engine (Toyota 20v) pulls strongly.  (I chose this ratio because the CVH would not pull 5th in the standard box , the top speed was better in 4th)

Tran-x are an excellent company to deal with.  I chose my ratios and it was despatched next day.  It costs £575 + vat + fitting,  if you do not fit it yourself.

Peter,

Referring to your first question about the ratios of a std Type 9, they are: 3.65, 1.97, 1.37, 1.0, 0.82

If (as it sounds) you're considering an interim 5-speed box, I'm selling a 2.8i/XR4i version of the Type 9 with a slightly taller first gear of 3.36.

Mail me if at all interested, its not expensive and its the type that C@terham fit as a 'std' 5-speed due to the slightly shorter 1st gear.

Cheers

Gary

Nick,

not sure about the torque yet,its 160 bhp pinto.

2.39 sounds the best option as it will be a dayley driver.

not woryed about me but the misses thinks shes gona drive it to work one day a week.

:) if she can get me out of it :)

I'd second the Tran-X option, seeing as I have one in my car at the moment !  Bought it second hand so can't comment on what Tran-X are like to deal with but it's a cracking little box.  It was put together by BGH and, for a straight cut box, isn't too noisy.

If the car is mainly for road use then you might also want to look at a BGH gearbox.  There's a slightly different spread of ratios which may be more appriate to fast road use.  Bit cheaper too.  Think Harv Surrey (user name, not his real one ! ) just fitted one to his 220bhp Zetec.

Finally, if noise is an issue, SPC do semi-helical close ratio boxes.  Think they're based on Quaife internals but might be worth a look too.

Sorry if that's just caused more, not less, confusion !!  :D

I'll 3rd the Tran-X SCCR box.  Just bunged one into the Vx and it's much, much quieter than the Quiafe in mine.  I also prefer the ratios in the TX box.  Though I haven't tried it on track yet they're certainly better on road.

Will tag my question onto here as it seems appropriate.

Have a 2 litre ZETEC (170bhp at present, but hopefully will soon be going up to 210-220 thanks to the Dunnell bros). It has an MT75 box and a 3.64 diff. This was the only gearbox the factory said would fit and knew nothing about type 9 etc.

To be honest I don't find the MT75 to be very good. It take a long time to warm up before the changing becomes reasonable. I also find at high revs need to double down.

Couple of questions. Do you think my box is ok?

What would be the best route to go to change? (I did pay a lot for Westfields short shift) and would it be worth it.

Pennies will be in short supply after engine upgrade.

not box related Rich ,as i know nothing about Mt75 upgrades ,apart from them being expensive ,but definately get the Dunnell upgrade.

I have not stopped smiling since it was done and the step from 170 to 225 was awsome

Does anyone have any contact details for any of the company's mentioned above, as i'm just about to start looking at what is available/costs for type 9 gearboxes with ratio's to suit trackday's / sprinting.
