Having had beamers for last 10 years it's time to change. Need to change my car in March. Been browsing auto trader and various other sites. I have found that the Audi A5 3.0 Tdi quattro ticks all my boxes. Not test drove one yet. Would be interested to hear others comments. I've never owned a diesel car before and I am used to silky smooth straight sixes. So does the 3.0tdi sound like a London cab, truck or van!

Diesels will never be as quiet as a petrol car but they've come a long way. Same goes for performance/acceleration - peeps buy diesels predominantly for mpg not mph. Ok, enough of the granny sucking eggs speech  :laugh:  the Audi TDi units get a good write-up and the 3.0ltr does perform well against its competition.

The A5 itself again gets excellent write-ups and I'd certainly consider this particular model if in your position.

I bet you'd never go back to petrol again after having one.

A couple of years ago I looked at 330d and A5 3.0d and went with the BMW.

For me the killer with the Audi was the 4 wheel drive hit fuel consumption, it didn't drive as well and I wasn't a fan of this particular audi interior around the instruments.

The new 3.0d bmw engine that came out about a year ago is a cracker. My brother has it and in manual form gets about 45mpg driving normally hard.

At the moment I think BMW have VW/audi on the diesel refinement.

Best would be to drive both. If buying a BMW again try to get the latest 3.0d engine

If buying 2nd hand I would also look at A8s and 7 series. The first year depreciation is horrific so some real bargains.

Ive just sold a 3.0tdi audi manual that had been remapped it was b****y quick!  like yourself ive run beemers for the last 5 years , we had a 530d manual /535d auto/ 335d auto then a manual 330d and felt was time for a change..

8 months down the line from selling the bmw I conclude that Personally i prefer the drive of the bmw 3  series to any of the Audis, the beemer m sports feels more of a drivers car certainly better more sporty to drive where as the audi is prob a better car to be driven in if that makes sense  :suspect:  :suspect: swmbo prefers the Audis  :oops:

bmw is better on fuel due to audis 4wd system but coming from a petrol bmw you should still be up on economy.  Audi quattro was awsome in the recent snow , bmw last year was parked up for 12 weeks  :bangshead:  :bangshead:

my advice get a drive in a A5 then back to back it with a 3.0d bmw, I would have a Diesel over a petrol everytime for day to day driving though.  :t-up:  :t-up:

Its the refinement that worries me most. The performance in real world terms is better than petrol even on paper the diesel does 0-62 in less than 6 seconds and a limited speed of 155mph. So performance seems excellent.

For the last 10 years I have approached this pragmatically and BMW always seems to win. The last time I was hoping the BMW wouldn't win but it did and I went for BMW again. I am now really bored with the marque. I have had a few problems with this BMW and decided that they are no more reliable than a Ford so this changes my balance. I've decided that this time I am going to let my heart rule the decision. If I did go BMW again I'd go for a 335d but I am not. I actually want a 4 wheel drive as I miss this very much especially after the last two winters. Also I want a coupe shape. I need to test drive it and it all may change again after that.  :blush:

I had the 3.0ltr TDI A5 Audi as my company motor for the 12 months {handed back in December} and loved it, the 4x4 IS very useful if you also fit winter tyres, leave summer tyres on and you will spin up alongside everyone else. {esp in deep snow and sheet ice}

I have now opted out the company scheme as have too many cars at home to justify the tax paid for company cars {inc fuel card} and even with the hike in fuel I am still better off out of the company car scheme {slight diversion on thread}

from a styling point of view the A5 certainly wins

no idea on the comfort though as I prefer cars that rattle a little more  :laugh:

Just gone from an A4 (2001) to a 320D and love the BMW but it not such a relaxed drive as the Audi was.

Yes the BMW is better, faster, sharper but for long runs (which I haven't done yet btw) nothing could beat the Audi for comfort.

I used to be able to do 200 miles without a blink in the Audi.

Both excellent cars so you won't go far wrong with an A5 although it will be a bit more compact :D

Food for thought. Thanks Jeff. I nipped across to the superchips website just to see what the chipping capability is. For the Audi an extra 55BHP and 31lb-ft for £425.  :)

Performance point not necessarily true (from personal experience).

After over four years I have just exchanged an A8 4.2 TDi (I'm now nearly retired, and no longer need a continent-crusher). Performance was not an issue  --  in fact the diesel is faster (5.9s) to 60mph and in the gears than the 4.2 petrol.
