Sony PS3 problem

Sat down with my GT5 xmas pressie and blue ray Forbidden Planet and the PS3 decides to stop reading discs....pah.

Watched a lot of youtube videos on what to do and tried the software 'fixes' (power on and off to get into the hidden options and rebuilt the file system that it said was corrupt).

I think it must be a hardware problem.

Anybody have experience of fixing these...it looks easy to get into from the videos, are the bits easy to source?

Any advice greatfully received.

It almost certainly needs a new laser. You can just get the laser and fit to the existing drive but that's a bit fiddly. Best to get a complete drive which is much easier to fit. It's more expensive but more likely to work.

There are videos on Youtube to show you what's involved. Here's a link: -

try vacuuming as much crud out of the PS3 as possible.

Phone Sony customer services and tell them you are completely p****d off with it and are going to buy an X-Box if its not fixed (because all your friends keep telling you how good X-boxes are).

I did this and Sony swapped mine out for a re-conditioned unit completely free of charge, despite it being 2yrs old and well out of it's original warranty.

Their thinking being that if you have a PS3, then you will buy their games and Blu-Rays and encourage others to do the same.
