Media streaming via PS3

Morning again

Advice appreciated - I have a networked hard drive with a substantial music library on it that I want to play from the hifi in the lounge. The hard drive is elsewhere in the house, but this is no problem as there's a network connection between the two.

My plan is to connect the hard drive to a PS3, and the PS3 to the TV and hi-fi. I know I can then watch films from the hard drive using the PS3 as an interface.

However can anyone tell me please if I can play music from the hard drive via the PS3 to the hifi, and whether iPOD / Media Player style functionality such as "playlists" and "shuffle" would be available?

If it'll do all this I've a strong argument to get the PS3 using the "it'll do so much more than gaming dear......" approach!!

(I know I can get a Logitech Squeezebox or similar that will do the music stuff but want a more all-round solution)

Thanks

Rich

works fine for me

the play functions are not great and Windows media player is much better but with bbc iplayer, ITV on line and C4 as well now with the latest firmware update its a no brainer IMO

I uses TVersity media server on my windows 7 pc for streaming this to my PS3

Not sure about the shuffle options, but I was recently (last week) convinced that for streaming media a PS3 is possibly one of the best. Once I've got my shiny new PS3 and a new NAS, I'm going to use the shareware PS3 Media Server software (follow the link to the forums ;) ) as it transcodes pretty much anything to a playable format on the fly if I understand it right, so now issues with things like MKV files not playing that seem to be prevalent with some other streaming devices are less of an issue... maybe...

I think errrr... whatever Blatman just said :D

Well that's no good. How on earth are we ever going to have a argument discussion if you're just going to agree with everything I say...:D

Hmmmm... Comet have the 120Gb PS3 slim for 229.99.

I am also wondering how much they'll be next week, so I'm going to wait. It's going to be a nervous wait

I can't wait - I've justified it as the kids Christmas present :)
