Have the insurance companies suddenly realised something about bike engines or has insurance just taken a hike in general?

I've been insured with sureterm for the past 6 years, generally cost around £140-150 for my car with xflow in, changed to BEC and it went up by £20, I changed where I was keeping it at the same time so wasn't sure if that made the difference.

There have been a few threads on sureterm recently hiking their prices so when I got the renewal £191 I did the rounds first, Pickles, comp car ins, Footman James etc..

"Is it a bike engine sir?" yup I reply, typical mechanics sharp intake of breath can be heard on the other end of the phone!

Cheapest qoute was £235 but they went up to £377.

Might as well go with sureterm I thought so rang them up. We'll just run through your qoute sir make sure we are getting you the best deal, what cc is the car 998cc, thats not a bike engine is it? Yes, just like it was last year! Oh we didn't realise, best we can do is £277.

I told them I'd had cheaper qoutes and in the end the brought the premium down to £235 by rducing their fee but there is obvioulsy something going on!

Insurance renewals are up generally. The insurers are (probably) trying to recoup money lost by paying out on banking (loan) insurance...

Car Insurers are currently running at 120% loss ratio - i.e. in claims and expenses they pay out 120% of the premium they recieve...

The scammers are the people that run the "claim helpline" companies who get you an instant hire car plus £2k-£3k for whiplash...THEN charge the insurer.

from Blatchat when a similar non-BEC question was asked...

I'm surprised Blatman didn't do a search....  :p

Looking at their website bike engine get a 2.5x loading and turbo or supercharged 1.5x loading

S0 a non bike car might be £200. An equivalent bike engined car would be £500 !!!

Im expecting an increase in Feb when my insurance is due. Im currently paying £132.

But when I look at the performance my BEC Westy gives me and I look at an alternative with similar performance/handling/fun factor...........  I realise the insurance could potentially be considerably higher

just had a quote for a megablade from frank pickles 385 quid  :bangshead:  :bangshead: ........... my duratec is insured with them and that was 149 quid fully comp

for BEC between 600cc - 900cc frank pickles are best but you need to ring them not do it online as apparently online it uses a different underwriter costing £385, however if you ring them they use the underwriter Highway & its only £84.90 F/C, parts only,  2k miles per year with european cover, mind you im 48, no endorsements & live in sleepy Devon, also note there is no agreed value on this policy so its up to you whether you take the risk

Hi andyfiggy

the quote i got for 385 quid this morning was online 3k miles & fully comp & i'm also in my 40's   however there was no club discount (frank pickles do discount for wscc members)

i was well pleased with my insurance with them for the duratec though, a good bit less than footman james (who i have been with for a few years) sureterm etc

isnt it more that everyones situation is different? ages, points, accidents, location, where its stored, claims, i cant see comparing one persons against another as being a near comparison
