furtive Posted March 28, 2003 Posted March 28, 2003 I've been offered a shallow sump and some other bits, but I'm not sure what they are for or what to do with them. It comes with a HP/HC oil pump, sandwich plate, oil cooler and pipe work. So, what are they for, do I need them and if so what do I do with them? Quote
Mark Williamson Posted March 28, 2003 Posted March 28, 2003 A shallow sump is to allow more ground clearance than the standard sump. If your car already has a shallow sump or you decide not to change your sump, could you pass the details onto me, my x-flow still has a standard sump! Cheers Mark Quote
oioi Posted March 28, 2003 Posted March 28, 2003 if so what do I do with them? fit them to the car? sorry couldnt resist. what are they for you could achieve one of two things using the shallow sump. you could fit and raise your ground clearance. you could fit and lower the engine, maintaining the same ground clearance but lowering the center of gravity. you should also see improvements in oil pick up and distrubution prolonging engine live (especially if using sticky tyres). on the whole a good thing, and if cheap then well worth having. furtive Posted March 28, 2003 Author Posted March 28, 2003 Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear. I know what the shallow baffled sump is for - that's why I'm getting one. It's all the other bits that come with it that I don't know about. Quote
furtive Posted March 28, 2003 Author Posted March 28, 2003 Oh, and the sump is coming off an Escort. Will it fit?? Quote
mickd Posted March 28, 2003 Posted March 28, 2003 Furtive, please be careful buying sumps of rally escorts. The big wing shallow sumps are not always compatable with a xflow and a type 9 g/box. The 'wings' can be in the wrong place to allow fitment of the starter motor! Check before buying. Learnt the hard way, still got one sitting on the shelf Quote
furtive Posted March 28, 2003 Author Posted March 28, 2003 Thanks for the heads up. The chap is letting me have it on sale or return, so if it's no good for me I just give it back How will I know if it's a big winged sump just by looking at it? Quote
