cast iron
Get one with an FTDI chip.. this is what most ECU manufactures recommend and causes less issues with progs written for old serial ports. CJ Get what with a FTDI Chipset, the cable, the card, or replacement hard drive!!!!!!
polly_x
Or buy a cheap old laptop that has a serial port? Dell D400's good for this. Nice and small and plenty available for less than £100 on ebay.

blankczechbook
my billinton usb serial i use for a few diagnostics.. so far no probs on an old xp machine. - had better try it on a windows 7 notebook just in case now.. ( as mentioned - you need to use the same usb socket to keep the com port the same, or it'll give a new com number and you might need to either get into control panel/system to move it, or reset all the software settings for each of the programs that'll use it.) ps we use it on webasto/wabco - and on a temp "blackbox" for freight. - and on the megasquirt of course :-D )

Andy Banks
I bought this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351766162399?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT and installed it under Windows 10. I also downloaded and installed the free VirtualBox and then set up a Windows XP virtual machine. Then I installed the Prolific drivers on the WinXP VM. I plugged the USB to Serial converter in and set the drivers advanced setting to COM1 on both Win10 and WinXP. I then plugged it into my Dunnell ECU and ran up UCAMS 1.24 and it only works!
Blatman
Holy thread resurrection... I use usb to serial converters for work (like Andy I suspect) and they are often pressed in to service for ECU's etc. This one linked to below works with everything, and I mean everything I have thrown at it. DTA's for sure, the rest I can't remember but betwen my brother and I we have been through Emerald, Omex, Megasquirt (euw...) and something in an Aston N23 GT4 that needed a good coat of looking at. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Keyspan-High-speed-Serial-Adapter-230kbps/dp/B0000VYJRY/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1471564817&sr=1-1&keywords=keyspan+usb+serial+adapter
