Nice 7 bed house for sale in a beautiful village - catch is that 400mm under the surface of the garden is a scheduled monument!! Bang go the plans to build a big garage !!

Still a good price though at o/o £250k.

Not the end of the world and you could work around that by putting in a shallow foundation since the top 400mm isn't scheduled.  

Bigger concern for me would be the listing which would likely remove most permitted development rights and therefore your proposed garage would attract the attention of the local planners and conservation officers who would then dictate it's materials and appearance.  That's assuming they'd even let you build it within sight of the neigbouring abbey.

Properties in that area are very good value, I fancied one a couple of years ago but it was too far from my family for comfort, sadly.

It does say that the area pertaining to the Manse is outside the schedule, though. (should that be 'outwith' in that part of the UK? )
