Guest Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Sold the Westfield last year as it was not getting much use. Decided just one car would do for me and SWMBO. Neither of us use a car for work, but still rack up 10,000 miles per year with a wide range of non work uses from shopping, UK travel, a couple of track days per year and a bit of trans-continental stuff. Currently got an R32 Golf but I am becoming a Porsche bore and ought to finally stop talking a just get one. I know there is a lot of knowledge and experience on here so, with a budget of 30k what would you advise? I have narrowed it down to three options: 993, 'classic' but usable day to day early current 997 (Don't like the 996 looks) Cayman S Thanks for any input you have. Quote
JeffC Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 John Ive been researching 997"s for last few weeks as im really fancying a 997 3.8s cab but they seem to be plauged with mechanical failures from what ive read my pal had a 993 which was a stunning car to look at and still my favourite porsche visually but It didnt drive so nice where as the 997 is a nice drive , Ive just started looking at 05- Boxters which are currently looking very good value! if you stick with the 997 idea £30k will get you a sensible mileage 3.8 s or you will get a lower mileage 3.6. from what ive read though make sure you get one with OPC warrenty which is transferable between private sellers Quote
peterg Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Cayman S it's top of my wanted list now over a 911 Quote
skOOby Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Ditto to Cayman S. Have driven the latest Cayman S and 911 Carrera 2 back to back. On road and on track, much preferred the feel of the Cayman, it's now top of the wish list! skOOby Quote
Guest Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Thanks for the replies folks. Went to classic Le mans with a colleague in his 993. Lovely car but they are still 14 years or so old, so I am a bit doubtful for year round general use. Do have tax and insurance advantages though. Cayman certainly seems to tick all the boxes and I guess, with the latest drop in used prices, should be able to get one with a good spec. Have looked at the Boxer which is a great car, but really prefer having a tin top for the main means of transport. Have to start looking round Quote
JohnCh Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 I have a 993 as a daily driver and love it. The 996/7 and Cayman S are all quicker, quieter, get better gas mileage, have dramatically better ventilation and ergonomics, have bigger boots, and the 996/7 also has significantly more room in the cabin. On paper, they are superior cars. However, for me, I prefer the more involving driving experience of the 993. My advice is to drive them all and decide which one puts the biggest smile on your face. -John Quote
