A Question For The Guru's

The screen on my SAAB 93 always smears when it is raining.  I have tried all the usual tricks of replacing the Wiper blades, cleaning the screen with various glass cleaners and even tried cleaning it with very mild wire wool (which always used to work on previous cars) and a million different screen wash products.

Many years ago in the late ‘60’s, when SteveD was 40, there was a powder produced by Redex called Clearelex which, quite frankly, was brilliant.  I have managed to track down Clearelex in liquid form and was hoping it would have the same effect but alas, no.

It isn’t oil on the screen.  I have even checked there is no oil mist coming from the engine and seeping under the bonnet seal.  It is just smearing with road filth.

So, my question to you is what, in your opinion, stops smearing of a windscreen?  Is it something you have concocted in the kitchen and works, or what?

Your suggestions are appreciated.

Clean your screen and blades with a good quality glass cleaner - or even white vinegar and newspaper  :)

Then apply RainX to windscreen (BUT) you must buff it and polish it ......... rain will bead off and no smears with blades

Its imperative that screen is clean and grease free before aplying RainX and you MUST buff it with a dry clean cotton cloth  :D

Believe it or believe it not.......................

50/50 white vinegar/water mix (not the brewed condiment type)

Spray on, keep rubbing until the liquid is smooth and clear coats the screen and is not beading - it does take some effort mind you so stick with it - then use the same on your wiper blades for smooth streak and squeak free wiping.

Once cleaned properly it only takes a little time when washing it.

Also, keep it in the car and spray it on at night if its going to freeze and it really does make a difference on a hard frosty morning.

It also cleans and sanitizes your internal car surfaces.

Great on house windows and mirrors too in bathrooms - stops them steaming up.

Thanks Mark.

I have in the garage some powder that removes (light) scratches from glass.  I was thinking of using this in the belief if there was some sort of impregnation (which I seriously doubt) of road filth, this would remove it.

Rainex, is that an accessory shop sort of purchase?

Christ, the suggestions are coming thick and fast!

Hilux, what do you mean “not the brewed condiment type”?  Having given up my Michelin star restaurant some years ago, the memory fades!

+1 for distilled white vinegar clean followed by Rain-X.

Distilled white vinegar is available in most supermarkets, and also does a half-decent job of removing sticky residue/glue left behind by stickers and is kinder to skin than thinners....

Simply white (wine) vinegar.............available at Tesco etc

NOT Fish and Chip stuff (brewed condiment)

It works - Honestly - try it

Look up uses for vinegar, theres millions it s amazing stuff and anticeptic too

I`ve tried all that RainX stuff over the years, yes the rain beads off and runs off but it still smears the screen.

That looks like Frank.  Can’t remember what folk do for “the price of a pint” though!

Judging by your location, do I meet you by the burning Cortina started by the lady with “Love” and “Hate” embroidered on her fingers, married to the husband sporting a tattoo of an Eagle on his back?

Perhaps a service station with CCTV is where I’m coming from.
