echoz Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Looking for any pointers the wscc massive might have! Recently my internet has gone real slow. Webpages take 10 times as long to load and sometimes dont load properly. Also half the time it says webpage unavailable but then on refresh loads fine. Im using Chrome, have checked and it is up to date. also i have cleared all the history. Is it just me experiencing problems with Chrome? Is there anything else I can do to speed it back up again? I live in a house with 10 people and im on the top floor so I only get 2 bars of signal at best, and obviously lots of people using there internet will slow it down, but it has only recently become this slow? Any ideas TIA Quote
bhouse Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 If everyone's on their favourite torrent site downloading the latest Harry Potter we access will be slow. However, try running a full anti-virus and a full anti spyware scan as it sounds as if you may have picked up a little something... Quote
echoz Posted November 11, 2010 Author Posted November 11, 2010 I think it may have something to do with matey downstairs setting his xbox up and messing round with the router b****y call of duty Put it on a scan last night, came up clean, will have a look and see if i can make it to a proper decent scan later Quote
sailing Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I do not think the scanning will help, it sounds as if you have multiply programmes running. I have the same problem now and then and it is either the computer running an internal scan of you have multiply copies of the same programme running, in particular Google Chrome. Try looking at your task manager to see what is running and what you can stop. I ma not a computer wiz but I found it help me Tony Quote
bhouse Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 That's a good point - everytime you open a new tab in Chrome it runs pretty much the entire programme again, so if you have multiple tabs your PC could start to slow down. If it's just the internet that's the problem though, I think your neighbour's X-box connection is worth investigating. Quote
DavidR Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 An X Box added to my network with a 2MB connection killed it for speed and had to upgrade to 10MB for when they were playing online. Quote
echoz Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 Hmm I think thats my culprit then. I do run quite a few tabs at same time normally so ill bare that in mind to cheers guys Quote
Blatman Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 The computer running slow is a RAM issue, IE, there isn't enough to support the amount of resources in use by the computer. Every programme opened uses resources like RAM and page swap memory etc etc. The internet running slow is a connection issue. The two are often not related and no amount of extra RAM will make the internet faster. I agree with DavidR. If there is a device in the house that is uploading and downloading to the 'net (and online gaming means precisely that) then the connection will be slow. If it speeds up with the XBox turned off then you'll know... Quote
Simeon Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Have you tried repairing your wireless connection? right click the wireless connection on the task bar and select repair or do a full reboot Quote
Mike H Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 In the grander scale of things browser tabs generally use naff all memory. Tell your resident gamer to get a life and stop hogging the bandwidth. Then smash his XBox. Mike Quote

echoz Posted November 13, 2010 Author Posted November 13, 2010 Blatters your the second to advise that lol Mike this was my objective, but to say the least ive alienated myself from the people who live here as i arrived 3 - 10 days later than them (depending on when they moved in) and i have naff all in common with any of them. and the one on my floor is causing the main issues... but thats another story that im not getting into lol... it is irratating that io got in earlier and xbox is left on downstairs and there all on teh middle floor, and its still on now n there still not down there student life, i hate it! cheers for the pointers and simeon will look at the connection edited to add troubleshooted the connection and it said it had changed something so hopefully will improve things Quote
blankczechbook Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 restart the home hub/modem.. can sometimes help if speeds have gone crap and can't see other issues.. restart costs nothing / only takes 2mins. :-D worth a try. Quote
