Norb Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 As a recently new Westfield owner, I have just had my first MOT, and sadly failed due to exhaust emissions. (Twin Webers on Ford Kent Crossflow) I am going to put the car on a rolling road in the Spring, but what is the best option to get the emissions changed to get me through the MOT ? Any recommended specialists in the Staffordshire area ?
jeff oakley Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 Is your car Q reg, if so the MOT tester should have just made a visual check only. As long as there is no black smoke its a pass. Many testers do not know this and still put the pipe up the exhaust. If it is not Q reg then the test is emmissions as per the year of registration ie if it is S reg then the emmissions applicable then will have to be passed. If it needs a tune look on Steppenwolf site of rolling roads.
mb893 Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 True, except that if the log book says "Kit" or "Amateur" built it's the same pre 76 test - i.e. vis smoke only and it doesn't matter what style reg plate you have. If the tester disagrees, either get him to look in his MOT ref book or phone DVLC while your with him and get them to point out the error of his ways. Best bet, go back to the test station and have a chat.
Mike Posted March 9, 2003 Posted March 9, 2003 i think if it says on your log book "built from parts", it means you have a visible check only. go back to the MOT place and let them know! mike
Warren E Smith Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 http://www.via.gov.uk/mot/about_the_scheme/mot_info_page.htm see section 5. they SHOULD MAKE A MANUAL AVAILABLE TO YOU etc. etc. section 6. THE FAILURE FORM SHOULD MAKE REFERENCE TO THE MANUAL. Did it? Grounds for appeal me thinks. How can any car theortically still running on leaded 4 star pass an emmissions test? ( i know lead is nothing to do with it but its the principle right! )
Norb Posted March 16, 2003 Author Posted March 16, 2003 Thanks to those who offered advice. I am now sorted. The garage should not have checked the emmissions, as the vehicle is "kit" or "amatuer build". Norb
