Fat Albert Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Herb, our 18 year old male cat is sitting bemused at the behaviour of my sons (21, 23 & 26 year olds) who've just been cuddling his litter sister, Spice, before she is taken to the vet for the last time! She has been deteriorating for the last couple of months and has reached the point where her quality of life is pretty poor. She sat in the garden, in the sun, for a couple of hours yesterday and had her last walk at dusk! My eldest insisted on going with 'er in doors as he knows how utterly pathetic I am when it's time to say goodbye to a loved one! It's chucking it down outside... but it's raining harder inside my study Quote
chazpowerslide Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 I feel for you. Been there with a couple of Irish Setters 20 years or so ago (brother and sister) both got cancer within a couple of months of one another. Nothing could be done for either and I had two trips to the vet within a month, that coupled with being freshly divorced ment the house felt scarily empty for a long while afterwards................. Chaz. Quote
greenandmean Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Been there, its about 30 years ago but feels like last week. Couldn't drive home for about 20 minutes after coming out of the vets, till the eyes had dried a bit. Quote
Gromit Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 QUOTE My eldest insisted on going with 'er in doors as he knows how utterly pathetic I am when it's time to say goodbye to a loved one! I would`nt say pathetic, more like someone whos cares a lot about his pets (probably better to call them companions). Been there myself several times on that horrible one way trip to the vets. Quote
fatbaldbloke Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 I feel for you. I still remember that trip with Misty, our beautiful Burmese cat, some 25 years ago as if it were yesterday. I know it doesn't ease your sadness, but thanks for the opportunity to remember our very special pet. Quote
perksy Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Sorry for Your loss been there and its not good They stop being pets and become members of the family pretty quickly... Quote
7sRWild Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Oh crap, theres that lump in the throat again. Been down the same path and it never gets any easier. Chin up mate.. Quote
Norman Verona Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Lynne & I send our love to you all. We also have been there. However, just remember you have given Spice a good life. We found the best therapy was to get another animal to treasure. Quote
Fat Albert Posted October 27, 2010 Author Posted October 27, 2010 . now six two feet under, hey, ho, life goes on Quote
neilb Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Feel for you, still remember taking the cat I had grown up with to the vet for the last time... Quote
mikef Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 I've been there with a couple of dogs whose quality of life had totally disappeared. It's the right thing to do but it is still heart rending. My dogs have always been part of the family and their loss was treated as such. You're right, life does go on but with a big hole in it for quite a while. Quote
blue_toaster Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I'm very sorry to hear that. I had to have my dog put to sleep a year ago and I still miss him. Quote
dombanks Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 pets can be so much stress, zappy had a spell a few months back where he would dissapear for 3 days at a time, i think he just expanded how far he went and got lost a couple of times as he's settled down to just 1 or so days away. every time he went out it was a worry. now molly is going out too so its a second worry. abbie expects zali (horse) to live to about 28-30 so when she goes it will be awful. and when charley ended up in colic surgery in the summer we thought she migh ahve been a gonner too just like women you cant live with them you cant live without them!
