Just been out for a blat this afternoon.  When I got home I noticed two problems and would be grateful for any advice.

1. There is a slight knocking sound at tickover, which disappears when the clutch is depressed.  I have read the threads on ZETEC's with MT75 gearboxes.  However, I run a CVH with a type 9 box.  Do they suffer the same problem?  The gearbox has only done 1500 miles since recon. Should I have it looked at? :durr:

2. I noticed some minor brake fluid seepage from one of the front brake nipples.  Anyone experienced this one before?  ???

Any advice would be appreciated.

Leaking brake fluid is serious - won't get better on its own.  Suggest trying to gently tighten bleed nipples, dry everything off and ensure that there are no further leaks.  Otherwise, your bleed nipple fittings / sealing will hav eto be checked, posilbly new nipples will do it. (haven't written about nipples for a very long time !!;)

I have cleaned the nipple off  ;) and ensured that it was tight.  Still minor seepage when braking, just enough to wet the finger, if you know what I mean   ;)

God this  sounds perverse!

I will try replacing the nipple and see if that solves the problem.  Anyone else experienced this problem?

the bottom line is this IMO.................

"any brake leakage should be rectified immediately" and then tested/checked on your drive for leaks etc by stomping on pedal etc etc etc.

If you cannot get rid of leaks then replace faulty part automatically.

How fast do you wanna be going when it fails completely

Buy a new bleed nipple - they're widely available at motor factors.

I second Peter R opinion for the brake issue,

GEARBOX noise most RWD cars suffer from this noise as it happens its got a few names all for the same thing release bearing chatter is the most common i would say its basically the bearing rattling on the shaft, and once depressed the bearing is jammed up against the cluch hence the noise disappears. my cvh westy with type 9 used to do it and about 15 other RWD cars  ive had cortina's capri's, granadas and even my M3 evolution did it as well. don't worry about it, if it was really bad replace the bearing as they can wear and rattle that bit more but i have replaced quite a few and they were cured for a couple of months and then it returned, its up to you dude, :0  :D  :t-up:

Thanks for that neo - I thought it probably was a noisy clutch release bearing, however I had never noticed it knocking before.  I will live with it and see what happens.

The most pressing job.....(excuse the pun)......... will be to sort out the break leak.  Never come across a nipple leaking before.  However I shall replace it at the weekend and hopefully that's it sorted.

Not being terribly mechanically minded, any advice is good advice - good old WSCC. :t-up:

Also suggest you check your fluid level in your master cylinder, as the leak may have been there a while before you spotted it.

Cheers

Thanks David

The fluid level is fine - the leak was only enough to smear my finger, so no major lose of fluid.  The leak is coming from the end of the nipple.

I will replace it at the weekend, if this fails I guess it is a new caliper.

Best replace the brake fluid at the same time.  What is the best brake fluid to use, DOT 4?  - any suggestions?

DOT4 will be fine.
